With 53 Greek films on the programme, 19 premieres and nine entries across its international competitions, the 67th Thessaloniki International Film Festival puts Greek cinema firmly in the spotlight.

The festival takes place on 5–15 November 2026. Its Greek Cinema programme includes 26 feature-length and 27 short films. For directors, cinematographers and production teams, the screenings offer a chance to present new work to audiences and film professionals.

The films in the international competitions

The International Competition includes A Whole Person Almost by Efthymis Kosemund-Sanidis, A Day in the Life of Jo: Phaedra Chapter by Jacqueline Lentzou, and Titanic Ocean by Konstantina Kotzamani.

Meet the Neighbors+ features Elena’s Decision by Stefanos Tsivopoulos and Crucified Again by Thodoris Papadoulakis, alongside two Cypriot productions with Greek co-production: The Lion at My Back by Tonia Mishiali and Hold Me by Myrsini Aristidou.

Film Forward features Dust Particles by Argyris Germanidis and The Judas Tree by Christos Chouliaras. The total of nine competition entries includes the two Cypriot co-productions.

New filmmaking voices

In A Whole Person Almost, a debt-ridden young man travels to a remote island hoping to inherit from his estranged father, a doctor. He encounters the community his father served and meets a local woman who dreams of leaving. Inspired by several real incidents, the film stars Orfeas Avgoustidis, Maria Nafpliotou, Giorgos Benos, Dimitris Lalos and Renia Louizidou.

The spread across three competitions provides an opportunity to discover different approaches to storytelling and form. For filmmakers and cinematographers, that makes the line-up a useful occasion to examine how emerging directors construct characters and use locations to shape their work.

Restoration and accessibility

The programme also highlights Eva (1953), directed by Maria Plyta, the first restored Greek film to screen in the Cannes Classics section in 2026. Its restoration was carried out by The Film Foundation’s World Cinema Project and Cineteca di Bologna at the L’Immagine Ritrovata laboratory, with the partners credited by the festival.

Accessibility is another substantial part of the announcement: 23 Greek films will screen with adapted dialogue-based subtitles for deaf and hard-of-hearing audiences. After the event, the festival plans to provide processed subtitles and audio description to producers for potential reuse in future screenings and distribution.

The event also builds on the city’s year-round film culture, with the Thessaloniki Film Festival cinemas having reopened for the new season on 1 October.

What we think

The significance of this programme goes beyond its numerical scale. Nineteen premieres give Greek production teams a meaningful opportunity to put new work in front of an audience and begin a conversation about their artistic decisions. For independent filmmakers, this direct encounter can matter just as much as a competition berth.

It also matters that the competition films are distributed across different strands. That creates space for distinct cinematic styles and approaches rather than judging every film against a single set of expectations.

Accessibility deserves attention from the start of the filmmaking process, not only when a film reaches a festival. Making captioning and audio-description assets available to producers afterwards could help the work remain accessible beyond one screening, extending its reach to more viewers.
