Alexandroupoli is getting ready to fill with photographs, fresh ideas and people who love making images: from October 31 to November 8, the city will host its first Alexandroupolis Photo Week.

The initiative comes from the Creative Photography Center of Thrace, whose members have been nurturing photography in the region for almost twenty years. With volunteer work and a great deal of personal commitment, they are bringing nine days of photography to the city, under the auspices of the Greek Ministry of Culture and the Municipality of Alexandroupoli.

Nine days to look, learn and meet

The program brings together solo and group exhibitions, project presentations, talks, discussions, creative workshops and portfolio reviews. For photographers, it is a welcome opportunity to share work, hear new perspectives and connect with people beyond their usual circles.

Younger audiences will have a place too. Educational activities for children and students will explore photography as a way to observe, ask questions and tell stories. Events will spread across Port Warehouses 1 and 2 and the former Bank of Greece building, bringing photography into different parts of the city.

A conversation about photography today

The opening takes place on Saturday, October 31 at 19:00. At 19:30, Iraklis Papaioannou, Dora Lavazou, Konstantinos Pittas and Eirini Kontogeorgiou will join the opening discussion, “Photography Today.”

They will explore questions many image-makers are already asking: photography’s place in society, the ways technology and artificial intelligence are changing how images are made and understood, and where the medium may go next. The audience is invited to take part in the conversation.

Photography brings people together across borders

Contributions and collaborations from Turkey and South Korea will give the event an international dimension. Those connections are rooted in earlier work: the “Facing Gazes” exhibition brought photographers from Alexandroupoli and Edirne together through pictures of everyday life on both sides of the border.

The “Unexpected Encounter” exhibition similarly opened a dialogue between photographers from Greece and Korea. It is encouraging to see these exchanges continue as part of a broader photographic gathering.

Dates and practical information

Alexandroupolis Photo Week 2026 runs from Saturday, October 31 through Sunday, November 8. Its main venues are Port Warehouses 1 and 2 and the former Bank of Greece building. The opening ceremony and main panel are scheduled for 19:00 and 19:30 respectively on October 31.

Visit the official Alexandroupolis Photo Week website for the full program and updates. The announcement available to us does not specify individual exhibition opening hours or participation arrangements for workshops and portfolio reviews.

What we think

We are always pleased to see photography initiatives taking shape outside major urban centers, especially when they grow from a community willing to give its own time and energy to share a passion for pictures. The Creative Photography Center of Thrace has already put in years of work, and Alexandroupolis Photo Week feels like a wonderful continuation of that commitment.

We also love that this is about more than exhibitions. Workshops, portfolio conversations, public discussions and activities for children can bring experienced photographers together with people just discovering photography. Our community benefits from more chances to meet face-to-face, exchange ideas and inspire one another.

PTTL is proud to support the inaugural event as a media sponsor. We wish the Center’s team, all volunteers, photographers and partners every success: full rooms, memorable encounters and plenty of powerful photographs. Above all, we hope this first Photography Week grows into a lasting tradition that gives people more reasons to visit Alexandroupoli year after year.
