LK Samyang has teased the AF 28-135mm F2.8 FE, an autofocus zoom for full-frame Sony E cameras that combines a broad focal range with a constant maximum aperture of f/2.8.

For wedding, event and documentary photographers, the appeal lies in moving from an establishing shot to a tight portrait without changing lenses. This remains a development preview; we have not tested its optical performance or autofocus.

How close does it get to a 24-70mm and 70-200mm combination?

The 28-135mm range covers a substantial share of the work usually split between a standard zoom and a telephoto lens. During a ceremony or event, that could reduce interruptions to change equipment, particularly for creators working with one camera body.

It does not replace the entire 24-200mm range. The 24mm end remains useful in tight interiors and group photographs, while 200mm offers greater reach for tight framing from a distance. The choice depends on the shots each assignment actually requires.

Specifications revealed in the preview

Optical construction20 elements in 16 groups
Minimum focusing distance27cm at 28mm / 73cm at 135mm

The lens extends as it zooms, which is worth factoring into gimbal use. A constant maximum aperture keeps f/2.8 available throughout the range, but that alone does not establish the lens’s overall video performance.

Price and availability

The announced launch window is February 2027. The available preview information does not include pricing, and no official European price was found.

What we think

This is a potentially useful option for photographers who prefer to keep one body ready for different compositions, particularly at weddings and events. Whether it can become their main working lens will depend on autofocus reliability, image quality at the telephoto end and the final price, as well as its zoom range.

Frequently asked questions

Can it be used on Sony APS-C cameras?

The Sony E mount allows use on compatible APS-C bodies. Its field of view is roughly equivalent to 42-202.5mm on full-frame, so it no longer provides wide-angle coverage.

Is it a macro lens?

Short focusing distances alone do not make a lens a macro lens. Close focusing should not be confused with life-size 1:1 reproduction.

Has its video performance been tested?

We have not conducted our own tests of focus breathing, focus transitions or focus retention while zooming. These remain points to assess in a future review.
