The premise, without spoilers
Hig, a young pilot, and Bangley, a military survivalist, have created an efficient but isolated homestead in a brutal post-apocalyptic world. Their balance changes when Hig receives a mysterious radio transmission.
Rather than remain within the safety of the homestead, he ventures into the unknown in search of the hope and humanity he still believes exist.

Direction and production
Ridley Scott directs from a screenplay by Mark L. Smith, based on Peter Heller’s novel. Producers are Ridley Scott, Michael Pruss, Mark L. Smith and Cliff Roberts, with Scott Free Productions and 20th Century Studios behind the film.
Erik Messerschmidt serves as cinematographer. The official material shows a cold, wet world with restrained contrast and natural environments, keeping the scale of catastrophe close to the characters rather than relying on spectacle alone.

Scott returns to science fiction
Scott’s career covers very different forms of science fiction, from Alien and Blade Runner to The Martian. The Dog Stars appears closer to the human survival side of the latter than to Alien’s industrial darkness.
PTTL included the film in our list of the movies we most anticipated in 2026, because Scott’s visual language remains relevant to photographers and filmmakers beyond the story itself.

Release date and Greek availability
The official 20th Century Studios page lists an August 28, 2026 US release. Disney UK Press lists August 26 for Britain, while in Greece it will premiere on August 27, 2026 for Greece.

What we think
The appeal is not only Scott’s return to science fiction, but the change of scale. Instead of empires and giant spacecraft, the story is built around a few people, a plane, a dog and the decision to leave safety for something uncertain.
