Rhodes Amateur Photographers Club C.Ro.P. will celebrate World Photography Day with a digital exhibition and parallel activities at Argyrokastrou Square in Rhodes Medieval City on Wednesday, August 19, 2026.

The event is co-organized by C.Ro.P., the South Aegean Region and the Municipality of Rhodes and will run from 20:00 to 23:00, with a digital presentation of photographic work by the club’s members at its core.

The choice of August 19 connects the Rhodes event with the international celebration of photography, a day dedicated to the art, craft, science and history of the medium. The date refers to August 19, 1839, when the daguerreotype process was publicly presented in France, marking one of the defining moments in the history of photography.

“LIGHT” at the center of the digital exhibition

A central part of the evening will be the digital exhibition featuring C.Ro.P.’s theme for this year, titled “LIGHT.”

Light is the fundamental material behind every photographic image, while at the same time offering a remarkably broad field for creative interpretation, ranging from the handling of natural and artificial lighting to the use of shadows, contrast and color as elements of composition.

Presenting the work as a digital projection allows a series of different photographic approaches by the club’s members to be shown in a public setting within Rhodes Medieval City.

Photographs from sporting and cultural events in Rhodes

The program is not limited to the “LIGHT” theme. Photographs taken by C.Ro.P. members during local activities will also be presented, including images from the Rhodes International Marathon, “Rhodes for Life” and other sporting and cultural events.

The exhibition therefore also serves as a photographic record of local activity, highlighting photography’s role not only as a form of personal artistic expression but also as a means of documenting events, people and moments within a community.

Photography history and interactive “photography corners”

The event will also include a presentation dedicated to the history of photography, while “photography corners” featuring activities for visitors will be set up at the venue.

The historical aspect is particularly relevant because of the date itself. On August 19, 1839, details of Louis-Jacques-Mandé Daguerre’s daguerreotype process were presented in Paris, a development that played a decisive role in the spread of photography.

PTTL has previously explored the history behind August 19 being chosen as World Photography Day and its connection with the public disclosure of the daguerreotype process.

An event for everyone who loves photography

According to C.Ro.P., the activities are designed to introduce photography to the public, promote the medium and highlight it as a form of expression, recreation and creative amateur activity.

For photographers and creators, the event has added interest because it takes photography outside a conventional exhibition space and places it directly in front of residents and visitors to Rhodes.

World Photography Day is celebrated internationally every year on August 19, focusing on photography as an art, craft, science and historical medium.

What we think

Holding an open digital exhibition inside Rhodes Medieval City gives World Photography Day a meaningful local dimension. It is particularly positive that C.Ro.P. is not limiting the event to the presentation of individual photographs, but is combining personal photographic work, event documentation, historical content and activities for the public. For a photography club, this direct contact with people who might not normally visit a conventional exhibition is an effective way to keep photography an active part of local culture.
