What the new MISSION Monitor app offers
The free MISSION Monitor app for iPhone and iPad is scheduled for September 2 and requires iOS 18 or later. It turns the mobile device into an external monitor and remote control, addressing one of the main challenges of using an extremely small camera body with manual focus only.
Focus Peaking highlights in-focus areas with adjustable sensitivity, intensity and colour. Focus Assist supports pinch-to-zoom magnification, while Zebra Patterns help identify overexposed areas. The app also offers real-time LUT preview for GP-Log2 and custom LUTs, aspect-ratio and grid overlays, a centre marker, and basic camera controls for starting or stopping recording and changing capture modes.
50MP sensor, 8K and Open Gate
MISSION 1 PRO ILS uses the same 50MP 1-inch type Quad Bayer sensor and GP3 processor as MISSION 1 PRO. It records conventional 16:9 video up to 8K60 and 4K240, while 4:3 Open Gate capture reaches 8K30 and 4K120. Burst Slo-Mo can record ten-second 1080p clips at 960fps, although that mode is limited to 8-bit and does not support GP-Log2.
For colour and post-production, the camera supports 10-bit recording, GP-Log2, HLG HDR, bit rates up to 240Mbps and timecode synchronisation. GoPro Labs can unlock experimental functions including bit rates up to 300Mbps. GoPro also claims up to 14 stops of dynamic range in GP-Log2, a manufacturer figure that needs independent testing under controlled conditions.
Still-photo capture reaches 50MP, while 4:3 8K footage can deliver frame grabs up to 44MP. A 12MP Quad Bayer mode for 4K Open Gate combines pixels to prioritise dynamic range and low-light performance.
Micro Four Thirds, but no electronic contacts
The mount accepts compatible Micro Four Thirds lenses and can also use adapters for vintage and PL-mount cinema lenses. The important limitation is that the body has no electronic contacts. It therefore requires manual-focus lenses with a manual aperture ring, or compatible fixed-aperture optics.
There is no autofocus. On-camera Focus Assist provides up to 8x magnification and Focus Peaking highlights sharp edges. These tools make planned cinema work possible, but the camera is not a direct replacement for a hybrid mirrorless body when continuous subject tracking and automatic lens control are required.
Because the 1-inch sensor is smaller than the Micro Four Thirds image circle, the crop factor is approximately 2.7x without stabilisation and about 3x with HyperSmooth applied. A 17mm lens therefore produces a field of view close to 46-51mm full-frame equivalent. This is useful for telephoto work but makes truly wide framing more demanding.
HyperSmooth, audio and runtime
HyperSmooth is supported with rectilinear prime lenses from 6mm to 500mm, according to GoPro, although performance is guaranteed only for the focal lengths the company has tested. A short list of fisheye lenses also receives dedicated stabilisation profiles. The user enters the lens focal length so the camera can tune the stabilisation.
The four-microphone array records improved stereo sound and wind-noise reduction. A separate WAV file can store 32-bit float audio, while native multitrack recording, manual gain, limiting, Bluetooth 5.3 audio and USB-C microphone support extend production options.
The 2,150mAh Enduro 2 battery is rated for more than three hours of continuous 4K30 and more than five hours of 1080p30 under GoPro’s test conditions. Fast charging reaches approximately 80% in 27 minutes with a compatible PPS charger and 100% in about one hour.
Small and rugged body, not an underwater camera
The body weighs 197g and measures 89.6×58.7×46.1mm including the MFT mount. Its size is suited to vehicle rigs, drones, cable cams and restricted spaces where a conventional cinema camera becomes impractical. It offers three mounting options and a weatherproof construction.
Unlike the fixed-lens MISSION 1 and MISSION 1 PRO, however, the ILS is not rated for integrated waterproofing to 20 metres. An appropriate protective solution is required for underwater use.
GoPro describes it as an exceptionally small and rugged cinema camera, but that remains a manufacturer claim rather than an independent comparison. Real ergonomics, 8K thermal behaviour and stabilisation consistency across different lenses will need to be assessed in real productions.

MISSION Monitor appears to address an important part of the workflow, but the system’s final value will be determined on set rather than by the specification list alone.
