Summary
- GoPro MISSION 1 cameras gain faster shutter response and continuous still-photo capture.
- The firmware enables more than 20 consecutive 50MP RAW frames.
- MISSION Monitor adds exposure tools and wireless preview.
- Anamorphic support requires GoPro Labs on the PRO ILS, with rear-screen desqueeze still to come.
GoPro’s MISSION 1 cameras are getting faster still-photo capture and continuous 50MP RAW shooting, while the PRO ILS gains anamorphic lens support through GoPro Labs.
Announced on October 13, 2026, the free updates add functionality to the existing MISSION 1, MISSION 1 PRO and MISSION 1 PRO ILS rather than introducing new hardware. The MISSION 1 compact cinema camera range first arrived earlier this year with 8K and small form factors as headline features; this time, the changes are about taking photos and monitoring footage.
More than 20 consecutive 50MP RAW frames
GoPro says it has rebuilt the cameras’ still-photo capture pipeline. Rapid Photo is designed to reduce the delay between pressing the shutter and taking a photo. The company describes it as “zero-lag”, though that is a manufacturer claim rather than an independent latency measurement under every condition.
Hold down the shutter with Continuous Shutter and, according to GoPro, you can capture more than 100 consecutive 12MP images or more than 20 50MP RAW images. A new display indicator warns as the buffer approaches its limit, and the updated shutter sound gives clearer audible confirmation for each frame. For street, travel and action shooting, the practical benefit is being able to keep shooting through a moment rather than triggering each still separately.
The limits matter: Rapid Photo and Continuous Shutter are not available in SuperPhoto, Interval Photo or Burst Photo modes. GoPro says results depend on lighting, subject or camera motion, settings and microSD card performance. The optional Point-and-Shoot Grip, which has two cold-shoe mounts for accessories, gives owners another way to use the compact cameras for handheld photography.
MISSION Monitor adds exposure tools and wireless preview
The free MISSION Monitor app for iPhone and iPad already offered a larger screen for checking framing and focus. This update adds four tools familiar from production monitors: histogram, waveform, RGB parade and false color.
The histogram maps overall brightness distribution, while waveform shows where brightness values occur across the frame, helping identify clipped highlights and underexposure. RGB parade splits out the red, green and blue channels to reveal color casts that can be hard to spot in a flat profile such as GP-Log2. False color replaces the live image with color-coded exposure information, including a way to assess skin-tone exposure.
Wireless connectivity now allows cable-free live preview and monitoring, and the app supports the new still-photo features. The update is free on the App Store and requires iOS 18 or later. GoPro has not published wireless range or latency figures in its announcement, so those should not be assumed for demanding on-set monitoring.
Anamorphic shooting on the PRO ILS, through GoPro Labs only
The most specialised filmmaking change is exclusive to the MISSION 1 PRO ILS, the tiny interchangeable-lens camera with a Micro Four Thirds mount. GoPro’s participation in the Micro Four Thirds system now has a concrete creative application: GoPro Labs, the public beta firmware rather than the standard release, introduces anamorphic lens support.
It supports squeeze factors of 1.33×, 1.5×, 1.6×, 1.8× and 2.0× with presets for switching between anamorphic and spherical lenses. The firmware writes pixel-aspect-ratio metadata into the recorded file so compatible desktop software, including Adobe Premiere Pro and DaVinci Resolve, can recognise and automatically correct the image proportions during playback and editing.
GoPro also lists HyperSmooth stabilisation compatibility, although its Labs release notes say the current anamorphic stabilisation quality is not yet final. Importantly, an on-camera desqueeze preview on the rear screen is not available yet. GoPro says the feature is coming later but has not given a release date.
Three free updates, installed separately
The photography firmware for all three MISSION 1 models is available through GoPro Quik or GoPro.com. The updated MISSION Monitor is a separate App Store download, while anamorphic support on the PRO ILS requires GoPro Labs firmware. All three are free, but there is no single standard firmware package that enables every feature on every model.
What we think
The welcome part of this release is that existing owners have a reason to revisit their cameras. If you shoot movement, a more responsive shutter and the ability to record consecutive 50MP RAW files could change how you work, rather than just add another menu option. It also makes sense to include an actual buffer warning: sustained RAW capture is only useful if you know when the camera is about to slow down.
For filmmaking, I find the MISSION Monitor changes more immediately useful than another headline resolution number. A tiny camera mounted on a rig or drone benefits enormously from waveform and false-color monitoring on a separate screen. Wireless viewing is convenient too, but without stated latency figures I would not yet treat it as a given for every professional shooting setup.
Anamorphic support is the most intriguing creative option because it takes the PRO ILS deeper into specialised optics. But terminology matters here: this is Labs beta firmware, the HyperSmooth implementation is still being refined, and rear-screen desqueeze has not arrived. For a booked production, I would test the full path from capture through the edit before relying on lens compatibility alone.
Frequently asked questions
Which models get continuous 50MP RAW capture?
All three: MISSION 1, MISSION 1 PRO and MISSION 1 PRO ILS. GoPro specifies more than 20 consecutive 50MP RAW frames with Continuous Shutter.
Does anamorphic support come with standard firmware?
No. Anamorphic lens support applies only to the MISSION 1 PRO ILS and requires GoPro Labs firmware rather than the standard photography update.
Can I see a desqueezed preview on the PRO ILS screen today?
No. The video metadata helps compatible post-production tools display the correct proportions, but a desqueezed rear-screen preview is still a future feature.
