Samsung Galaxy S27 leak points to new telephoto cameras and a 50 MP 4x Ultra test

The S27 and S27+ may inherit the S27 Pro’s 3x system, while Samsung is separately testing a 50 MP camera for the Ultra

Summary

  • A new rumour says Galaxy S27 and S27+ may use the same 3x system attributed to the S27 Pro
  • The current leak does not confirm sensor resolution or size for the two base models
  • Samsung is said to be testing a 1/1.9-type 50 MP sensor with a 4x telephoto lens for Galaxy S27 Ultra
  • The company may retain a 5x solution if the cost or performance of 4x does not justify the change
  • All details remain unconfirmed

Samsung is reportedly considering two different zoom changes for the Galaxy S27 family: a new shared 3x system for the S27 and S27+, and a test of a 50 MP 4x telephoto camera for the S27 Ultra.

The information comes from leaks collected by Android Authority and has not been confirmed by Samsung. The S27 and S27+ may use the same 3x camera previously attributed to the S27 Pro, although the newer leak does not define its resolution, sensor size or optical stabilisation.

For the Galaxy S27 Ultra, Samsung is reportedly testing a 1/1.9-type 50 MP sensor behind a 4x telephoto lens. The prototype is not considered a final selection: the company may retain a 5x solution if the new design fails to deliver enough benefit for its added cost and complexity.

What is known about the S27 and S27+

The core claim is a possible unification of the 3x camera across the S27, S27+ and S27 Pro. An earlier report on the Pro mentioned 12 MP at 3x, but the new leak does not repeat that specification for the two base models. It is therefore not safe to assume their resolution will be identical.

A shared module could reduce quality differences between models and simplify manufacturing. On its own, however, it does not prove an upgrade: sensor, aperture, focal length, OIS and processing will determine whether the new system meaningfully outperforms its predecessor.

The 50 MP 4x test for the S27 Ultra

A rumoured 1/1.9-type sensor would be relatively large for a smartphone telephoto camera and, paired with 50 MP, could provide room to crop towards longer equivalent focal lengths. A 4x optical position would also sit closer to portrait territory than a 5x lens.

There is a reverse trade-off: 4x requires more cropping for very distant subjects, while module size and cost can affect thickness, the placement of other cameras or the final price. The leak specifically indicates that Samsung is still deciding whether the change is worthwhile.

These are not confirmed specifications

The word “testing” matters. Manufacturers evaluate several modules and sensor combinations months before production, and not every prototype reaches the final product. The existence of a 50 MP 4x test does not confirm that it will be selected.

PTTL’s earlier coverage of the rumoured 200 MP main camera with variable aperture concerns a different part of the system and also remains unconfirmed. The two reports should not be combined as though they formed a final specification sheet.

Launch, availability and price

Samsung has not announced the Galaxy S27 family, its cameras, a launch date or prices. Official information on Galaxy smartphones is published on the global Samsung Galaxy website.

Until official material appears, current information describes possible prototypes rather than products with committed availability. There is no sound basis for a price conversion or cost comparison between models.

What we think

A possible S27 and S27+ upgrade matters only if it brings a better sensor and processing, neither of which the current leak reveals. For the Ultra, a large 50 MP sensor at 4x could improve portraits and intermediate zoom, but the fact that it is being evaluated alongside another solution is a clear sign that the decision is not locked.

Frequently asked questions

Will the Galaxy S27 and S27+ share the same 3x camera?

That is what the leak claims, but Samsung has not confirmed it and the sensor resolution and size are unknown.

Will the Galaxy S27 Ultra definitely have a 50 MP 4x camera?

No. The report says Samsung is testing it and may ultimately retain a 5x solution.

Is the S27 and S27+ 3x sensor known?

No. The newer leak gives neither resolution nor physical size for the two models.

When will the Galaxy S27 family be announced?

Samsung has not announced an official launch date.
