Summary
- The 2026 summer box office reached $4.598 billion through August 30
- It is already the second-highest nominal result on record
- The 2013 record stands at $4.756 billion
- Spider-Man and The Odyssey together represent nearly 32% of the market
- The current forecast implies a final shortfall of $18–22 million
The 2026 summer box office reached $4.598 billion in North America through the end of August 30, already becoming the second-highest nominal result on record.
According to Rentrak data cited by Deadline, the US and Canadian market still needs $158 million through Labor Day on September 7 to pass the $4.756 billion record set in 2013. Current estimates place the final result $18–22 million below that mark unless the final eight days overperform.
Even without the record, the season is a strong signal for cinemas: the latest weekend generated approximately $100 million from all titles, 46% above the same frame last year. Success was not evenly distributed, however. Two releases alone generated almost one third of all summer revenue.

Spider-Man represents about 20% of the entire summer
Spider-Man: Brand New Day leads with $891.8 million through Box Office Mojo’s August 31 update. It represents roughly 20% of the entire summer market by itself and is approaching $900 million in North America.
The film has already passed Avengers: Endgame to become the second-highest domestic release ever, behind only Star Wars: The Force Awakens at $936.66 million. Its fifth consecutive No. 1 weekend at $22.2 million shows exceptional staying power rather than dependence on opening alone.
The Odyssey and the other major supports
Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey ranks second for summer at $563.9 million, the director’s biggest domestic result. Together, it and Brand New Day account for nearly 32% of all dollar ticket sales since early May.
Toy Story 5 follows with $478.8 million and Focus Features’ Obsession with $263.5 million. Michael generated $242.5 million during summer despite opening April 24, while The Devil Wears Prada 2 added $220.6 million.
The top ten continues with Backrooms at $197.5 million, Minions & Monsters at $182.8 million, Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu at $177.7 million and the new Moana at $126.1 million. The mix shows that no single studio or genre carried the market: superheroes, mythological epic, animation, horror, musical biography and comedy sequel all found space.
Second best or a record? The comparison needs care
The $4.756 billion record from 2013 is nominal and not adjusted for inflation or today’s higher average ticket price. Passing it would be historic in revenue, not necessarily admissions.
There is also a calendar difference. The 2026 summer, measured from the first Friday in May through Labor Day, lasts 130 days. Rentrak’s Paul Dergarabedian says a fair 123-day comparison places 2026 at approximately $4.612 billion through August 31, still second all-time over equal periods.
What it means for cinemas
For exhibitors, $4.6 billion before Labor Day proves that summer moviegoing can still create consecutive event films. That matters for premium formats, concessions, auditorium scheduling and studio negotiations after years in which strikes, production delays and streaming shifts left calendar gaps.
At the same time, roughly 32% concentrated in two titles shows the risk. A strong season does not mean every week or venue performed equally. The Dog Stars and other weak releases showed that audiences remained highly selective even in a hot market.
The final week and the $4.756 billion target
The season ends on Labor Day, September 7. Paramount’s By Any Means is the only new major-studio wide release over the closing holiday, while Brand New Day is expected to remain strong with approximately $18–20 million over four days.
To break the record, all available films need $158 million after August 30. A forecasted shortfall of $18–22 million implies a final range of roughly $4.734–4.738 billion if estimates do not change materially.
What we think
Whether 2026 passes or misses 2013 by a few million matters less than the structure of its success. Summer demonstrated that cinemas can attract mass audiences when genuine events are combined with varied genres and a continuous release schedule. Nominal dollars alone do not describe admissions, and dependence on two titles remains a weakness. Even so, the second-highest result ever is a meaningful recovery rather than a statistical trick.
