Event Details
The exhibition “Another Europe” presents photographs from Takis Tloupas’s European journeys of the 1950s and 1960s from October 2 to November 4, 2026, with many of the images going on public display for the first time.
The Hellenic American Union is presenting the work of the emblematic Thessalian photographer in its galleries for the first time, in an exhibition curated by his daughter and fellow photographer Vania Tloupas. The opening takes place on Friday, October 2 at 7 pm at 22 Massalias Street in Athens, with free admission.
The exhibition matters because it shifts attention beyond Thessaly and Greece, the places most closely associated with Tloupas. The material illuminates a lesser-known period of personal travel and shows how the same human-centred vision followed the photographer through different European cities, landscapes and societies.
A European journey by Vespa and Citroën 2CV
The journey began in 1953 on Tloupas’s Vespa and later continued in his distinctive Citroën 2CV. According to the official presentation, he crossed Italy, France, Austria and Germany, photographing not only monuments and landscapes but also people, streets and moments of everyday life.
These routes were travelled through a Europe that was rebuilding after the war and changing rapidly. The photographs therefore function both as a personal travel diary and as documents of the social landscape of the 1950s and 1960s.
The European side of a quintessentially Thessalian photographer
Takis Tloupas was born in Larissa in 1920 and encountered photography in the 1930s during an excursion to Mount Olympus. After the Second World War, he opened a photography studio in Larissa and spent more than five decades documenting the Thessalian plain, agricultural labour, disappearing trades, nature, villages and everyday life.
This body of work established him as one of the important chroniclers of post-war Greece. “Another Europe” does not overturn that identity; it expands it, showing that his curiosity about people and place did not stop at Greece’s borders.
Curated by Vania Tloupas
Vania Tloupas, a photographer and custodian of her father’s archive, selected the material in order to present a more personal and restless side of the artist. As she says in the official announcement, the focus is on “the man behind the camera, the eternal traveller.”
The exhibition thus also becomes an archival reading. The selection is not limited to familiar images but includes photographs that had not previously been shown, allowing viewers to see how Tloupas observed an unfamiliar place and what he chose to retain from it.
Beyond the photographs: personal objects and the distinctive Vespa
At the Hellenic American Union galleries, the photographs will be accompanied by personal objects, archival material and Tloupas’s distinctive Vespa. Excerpts from Kalliopi Legaki’s documentary “My Father’s Photo Studio” will also be screened, adding family voice and memory to the presentation of the work.
The organisers state that the photographs were printed on Fujifilm DP II photographic paper. The exhibition is organised by the Hellenic American Union and Moments Collective, with Fujifilm Hellas and Kapon Editions as sponsors.
The legacy of Takis Tloupas
Tloupas remained active until his death in 2003, leaving thousands of negatives and an archive of historical and artistic value. In 1994, he was honoured by the Greek Ministry of Culture for his overall contribution to cultural life.

The value of “Another Europe” lies not only in the first presentation of unfamiliar photographs, but in the chance to reconsider Tloupas’s entire way of seeing. If the Thessalian plain showed how he documented a world he knew deeply, the European journeys can reveal what he looked for when he was far from it.
