The AI data-center boom is now reaching creators through the cost of memory: Blackmagic Design has raised prices on 36 products immediately, with some increases topping 50%.

The company attributes the move to sharply higher DRAM, flash and SSD costs. CEO Grant Petty says memory manufacturers are shifting production capacity toward AI data centers, while older component inventories that helped Blackmagic keep prices down are being replaced with parts bought at today’s much higher prices.

The pressure on memory did not appear overnight. The RAM shortage and its impact on technology costs has already started to spread from data centers into workstations, GPUs and other hardware creators rely on every day.

Why Blackmagic is pointing to AI

Petty says the cost of memory used in “almost everything” Blackmagic makes has risen several times over during the past year. According to information the company says it received from suppliers, memory consumption is running 60% above the peak of the pandemic-era shortages, while demand is another 30% beyond what manufacturers can currently deliver. Blackmagic summarizes that as demand running at roughly twice the COVID-era peak.

The company says the impact is especially visible on newer SMPTE 2110 products because they use substantially more memory. That helps explain why some of the steepest increases are concentrated in IP converters and ATEM systems rather than cameras.

The biggest increases

The largest increase in absolute dollars is the ATEM 4 M/E Constellation IP Plus, which moves from $12,995 to $19,960 — up $6,965, or roughly 54%. In percentage terms, the Blackmagic 2110 IP SDI to HDMI 12G rises even more sharply, from $515 to $925, nearly 80%. The 2110 IP UpDownCross 12G is up about 69%, while the ATEM Mini Extreme ISO G2 jumps from $1,995 to $3,090, roughly 55%.

On the storage side, the Cloud Store Max 48TB rises from $21,995 to $24,245 and the 24TB model from $13,995 to $15,495. Those changes are smaller in percentage terms than several IP products, but the absolute increase is still substantial for post-production teams and studios.

What this means for creators and small studios

The practical message is not that every product is becoming more expensive at the same rate. It is that memory-heavy and network-centric gear can move into a different budget tier very quickly. For a small live-production setup, the ATEM Mini Extreme ISO G2 now costs more than $1,000 extra. In larger control rooms, the increase on a Constellation IP Plus approaches $7,000 before taxes.

There is also a striking contrast within the same year. In September, Blackmagic announced price cuts of more than $1,000 on the Cinema Camera 6K and PYXIS 6K, showing that cost pressure is not hitting every part of its lineup equally. No cameras appear in today’s list.

The new prices apply only to new orders. Blackmagic says existing customer backorders will be fulfilled at the original price, which matters for teams that have already committed to equipment purchases.

What we think

This is one of the clearest examples of how AI can affect a filmmaker without them buying a single “AI product.” If memory production capacity moves toward the customers willing to pay the most — large AI data centers — the pressure eventually reaches the gear already sitting in our racks, studios and edit rooms.

For smaller production teams, the ATEM and 2110 IP increases are not abstract. An extra $1,095 on an ATEM Mini Extreme ISO G2 or nearly $7,000 on a Constellation IP Plus can reshape an upgrade plan, delay a purchase, or keep previous-generation hardware in service for longer.

What makes this especially notable is that the same company was cutting prices aggressively on its 6K cameras only weeks ago. This is not a simple across-the-board “everything costs more” move; it is a much more specific collision between component costs and how much of that increase a manufacturer can absorb.

Frequently asked questions

Do the new prices take effect immediately?

Yes. Blackmagic says they are effective immediately for new orders through its reseller network worldwide.

What happens to orders that were already placed?

Existing customer backorders will be fulfilled at the original price, according to the company.

Are Blackmagic camera prices increasing too?

Not in this announcement. The 36 increases cover DeckLink, IP/2110 converters, Cloud Store, HyperDeck, ATEM and Videohub products, with no cameras on the list.

Why is Blackmagic linking the increases to AI?

The company says memory manufacturers are shifting production capacity toward AI data centers, tightening supply and raising the cost of DRAM, flash and SSD components used in Blackmagic hardware.
