Photos and video of an influencer couple in Oman triggered international criticism after showing them sitting on a sea turtle at a nesting area, with the country’s Environment Authority confirming that legal action had been taken.

In material first posted on Instagram, Ukrainian fitness creator Vadym Oleynik and his fiancée Olena Kravchenko appear to pose separately on the animal’s shell in the Ras Al Hadd / Ras Al Jinz area. According to PetaPixel, the posts appeared on Oleynik’s account, which had around 200,000 followers.

The images also show contact with hatchlings, while the video appears to show the adult turtle moving across the sand as Oleynik sits on its shell.

Oman’s Environment Authority said it had been following the video circulating on social media showing a tourist disturbing sea turtles in the Ras Al Hadd area. The authority described the behavior as a violation of wildlife-protection laws and regulations and confirmed that the “necessary legal action” had been taken against the person concerned.

At the time of publication, no specific charge, fine or other penalty had been publicly announced. The official statement did not name the person involved, although international reports connected the incident with Oleynik and Kravchenko.

Authorities also reminded visitors to nesting areas not to touch, approach or disturb sea turtles, and to follow the instructions of officials and guides while keeping a safe distance.

The posts were deleted and an apology followed

Following the backlash, Oleynik removed the photos and video from Instagram. PetaPixel reports that he later issued an apology to Omani authorities and the turtle-protection body, describing the incident as a mistake.

The case has moved beyond another viral post because the images and video themselves became the material that prompted official intervention. It also reopens the question of where content creation ends and disturbance of wildlife begins.

When photography becomes an intervention

For photographers, filmmakers and creators, the basic boundary is simple: an animal should not be forced to change its behavior in order to create an image. Touching, obstructing movement or approaching during sensitive moments such as nesting turns observation into human intervention.

In protected areas, local rules and guidance from the responsible authorities take priority over any photographic or social-media opportunity. The same applies even when the contact appears brief or harmless on camera.

What we think

The strength of a wildlife image comes from documenting an animal without turning it into a prop. When a photograph requires touching, obstructing or pressuring an animal to make the frame work, the priorities have already been reversed. The creator’s responsibility is to move away, not to make wildlife adapt to the camera.
