Summary
NiSi is moving filtration behind PL-mount cinema lenses, offering filmmakers a quicker way to change ND and creative filters without rebuilding the front of each lens.
The new ATHENA Drop-In PL adapters come in Sony E, Canon RF and Nikon Z versions. Separately, NiSi has introduced a front-mounted True Color VND/PL with independent polarization control.
One filter set for multiple PL lenses
The ATHENA Drop-In PL system places a filter slot between the cinema lens and camera body. Instead of switching between different front filter diameters or rebuilding a matte box, compatible drop-in filters occupy the same position in the rig. That can save valuable time when swapping lenses on set.
Options include True Color VND, True Color CPL, Black Mist, Allure Streak and fixed FS ND filters. The VND and CPL drop-ins feature 0.8 MOD gears for adjustment using a separately purchased wireless lens motor, including during a take.

Without a filter, the PL-E weighs 195g, PL-RF 207g and PL-Z 229g. NiSi specifies 304 stainless-steel mounts, a seal at the camera interface and maintained infinity focus with a drop-in filter fitted.
Compatibility requires checking the lens and rig
The system supports the PL ATHENA PRIME lineup and many other PL lenses, but not every lens. Rear-element protrusion matters: NiSi’s official pages currently show conflicting maximum figures of 25.8mm and 28.5mm. Confirm the limit for your exact adapter and lens combination before purchasing.
The slot sits close to the camera, so cages, top plates or other mounting hardware may obstruct filter changes. A conventional matte box still has a place when flags, rectangular filters or more precise stray-light control are needed.
The separate True Color VND/PL is not a drop-in filter
NiSi’s True Color VND/PL 1–5 stops is a circular filter that screws onto the front of a lens. It combines 1–5 stops of variable attenuation (ND 0.3–1.5) and a polarizer with independent controls. You can adjust exposure and then reduce reflections on glass, water or foliage without disturbing the ND setting.

There are 11 sizes from 49mm to 95mm. NiSi specifies a slim metal frame, water- and oil-repellent coatings, luminous markings and SWIFT compatibility. Its claims about neutral color and avoiding the X-shaped cross-polarization pattern within the stated range have not been independently tested by us.

NiSi advises caution when adjusting polarization at higher ND settings around 4–5 stops, where color shifts can become more noticeable. Camera-specific testing remains sensible for color-critical work.
Price and availability
In NiSi’s US store, each ATHENA Drop-In PL adapter is listed for preorder at a regular price of $269, or $399 for a Filmmaker Kit with Clear, VND 1–5 stop, Black Mist 1/8 and a pouch. No definite shipping date is listed. No official European price was located for the new adapters.
US prices for the front-mounted True Color VND/PL range from $165 to $285 depending on diameter, with stock status varying by size. See the official ATHENA Drop-In PL adapter range and True Color VND/PL range for details.
What we think
The strongest argument for the drop-in design is speed when working with multiple cinema lenses. Switching front filters, step-up rings and matte-box setups takes time; a common filter position addresses that production problem directly.
But it will not replace every matte box. When you need flags, different specialty filters or have a cage blocking the slot, the workflow advantage narrows. It also makes sense to check rear-element clearance across an entire lens set before investing.
The screw-in VND/PL serves a different audience, especially small camera rigs and hybrid stills/video work. Independent density and polarization controls are useful in principle, but color accuracy and performance at the extremes should be tested rather than assumed.
Frequently asked questions
Does the ATHENA Drop-In PL work with every PL lens?
No. Compatibility also depends on rear-element clearance. Check the exact allowed protrusion depth for your adapter and lens combination.
Does the pictured True Color VND/PL fit inside the ATHENA adapter?
No. It is a front-mounted screw-in filter. The adapter takes the separate compatible ATHENA drop-in filters.
