Sony has set a new official Japanese release date for the Cinema Line FX5: 20 November 2026, following the delays that disrupted its original launch plans.
The announcement, dated 28 October, also covers three FX5 accessories and extends the Japanese promotional campaign linked to the launch.
From the August postponement to a firm Japanese date
Sony unveiled the FX5 on 22 July and originally scheduled its Japanese release for 21 August. On 18 August, the company announced an official postponement for production reasons without confirming a replacement date. A subsequent update suggested a release no earlier than late October.
Sony Marketing Japan has now set Friday, 20 November 2026 as the new release date. That announcement applies to Japan; it is not a global commitment covering deliveries in every market.
Three accessories share the 20 November date
The DVF-EL1 is a removable, tilting OLED viewfinder designed to help operators judge framing and monitor images in demanding outdoor lighting.

The XLR-H2 handle provides two XLR/TRS inputs and supports recording up to 96 kHz / 32-bit float, a useful setup for interviews and shoots where sound goes directly into the camera.

The VMC-BNCU1 timecode adaptor cable allows external timecode equipment to be connected for multicamera synchronisation or workflows with separate audio recording.

Japanese promotional campaign extended
Sony has also extended the purchase period of its Japanese Cinema Line FX5 launch promotion until 12 January 2027, rather than 28 September 2026. This extension relates to the Japanese campaign and does not establish the availability of an equivalent offer in Greece.
Europe and Greece: what is confirmed
Sony’s original official European announcement listed recommended prices of €5,399 for the FX5B body and €5,999 for the FX5 package with XLR handle. Those prices are not a new availability announcement.
Sony’s official German store currently lists the FX5 body for preorder, with shipping indicated from 8 January 2027. That is a store-specific indication and may change. No official release or delivery date has been confirmed for Greece.
Why filmmakers are watching the FX5
The FX5 combines a new 16.6 MP full-frame stacked sensor with up to 5K 60p, 4K 120p, 3:2 Open Gate and internal X-OCN RAW recording. That matters for productions requiring reframing flexibility in post without an external recorder. Its Cinema Line imaging features, including Open Gate and RAW are particularly relevant to compact professional filmmaking crews.

What we think
For anyone planning real shoots, the delivery date matters just as much as the spec sheet. You cannot confidently schedule lens rentals, workflow tests or a production starting in a few weeks around a vague shipping estimate. A firm Japanese release date helps, but only for buyers in Japan.
We would now like the same clarity for European deliveries. The FX5 offers genuinely useful tools for filmmakers, particularly internal RAW and Open Gate. But when a working professional is spending several thousand euros on a new camera system, knowing when the equipment will actually arrive is part of making a sound purchasing decision.
