Sony has officially postponed the FX5 and three key accessories, with no new release date currently confirmed.
In an official Sony Japan announcement published on August 18, the company said the Cinema Line camera will not launch on August 21 as originally scheduled in Japan, citing production-related circumstances. A new release date will be announced once it has been determined.
The development matters to filmmakers and professionals who have already pre-ordered the FX5, as the camera was only announced on July 22 and first deliveries had been expected during August. PTTL has already published an in-depth overview of the Sony FX5, which combines a 16.6-megapixel stacked full-frame sensor, Open Gate capture, internal X-OCN RAW and 5K recording up to 60p.
Sony’s official announcement
Sony Marketing Japan says the FX5 had originally been scheduled for release in Japan on August 21, 2026.
The company now says the launch has been postponed for production reasons, with the replacement date still undecided.
The delay also affects:
- DVF-EL1 OLED Viewfinder
- XLR-H2 Handle Unit
- VMC-BNCU1 Timecode Adapter Cable
New release dates for all four products will be announced later.
The warning signs appeared in July
The postponement follows an earlier official warning from Sony.
On July 28, when Japanese orders opened, Sony announced that it had received significantly more orders than expected and warned that some deliveries could take longer than initially planned.
At that stage, the release itself had not been officially postponed.
That changed on August 18, when Sony formally moved the launch date.
US retailers point toward September
Major US retailers have already adjusted their availability estimates.
B&H now points to September, while Adorama has listed September 15 as an expected date.
That does not make September 15 Sony’s new official release date.
Sony itself says the replacement schedule has not yet been determined.
Retailer dates should therefore be treated as estimates.
What about Europe?
The FX5 carries a European recommended retail price of €5,399 body-only and €5,999 with the XLR-H2 handle, as PTTL has previously reported in detail.
Initial European availability had been expected during August.
European retailers are now increasingly pointing toward September, but Sony has not published a single confirmed new European release date.
Why the FX5 has attracted so much attention
The FX5 is one of the most significant additions to Sony’s Cinema Line in recent years.
It features a newly developed 16.6-megapixel effective full-frame stacked Exmor RS CMOS sensor and BIONZ XR2 processing with a dedicated AI processing unit.
Major features include:
- 5K 3:2 Open Gate
- 5K recording up to 60p
- 4K up to 120p
- internal 16-bit X-OCN RAW
- Base ISO settings of 800, 4000 and 12800
- stacked full-frame sensor
- AI subject recognition
- dual CFexpress Type A/UHS-II SD slots
- waveform, vectorscope and false colour
- compact Cinema Line body

The VPG400 requirement
The FX5 had already generated discussion before shipping because of its storage requirements for demanding RAW modes.
Sony requires VPG400-certified CFexpress Type A cards for certain X-OCN recording modes.
PTTL has already covered the FX5 test using a VPG200 card, in which recording continued but the camera displayed a warning and offered no guarantee of reliable operation.
Sony has not connected that issue to the current postponement.
What remains unknown
Several important questions remain unanswered.
We do not yet know:
- the precise production reason for the postponement
- whether it involves hardware, software or manufacturing processes
- whether every unit or only particular batches are affected
- how many cameras have already been produced
- when shipments will actually begin
- whether release timing will vary significantly by region
Sony has not published these technical details, so speculation should not be presented as fact.
A delay before delivery is preferable to a recall afterward
For professionals waiting for the camera for a specific production, any postponement can create practical problems.
At the same time, if a manufacturer identifies something that needs attention before wide distribution, delaying shipment is preferable to dealing with the issue after cameras reach customers.
The important qualification is that we still do not know whether this is actually what caused the FX5 delay.
Sony’s only official public explanation is a production-related postponement.
What pre-order customers should know
There is currently no single confirmed date that FX5 customers can rely on.
Retailers may show September or individual dates during the month, but those estimates can change.
The clearest indication will come when Sony publishes a new official release schedule.
What we think
The formal postponement matters more than the earlier supply warning because the situation has moved beyond some customers simply waiting longer due to a pre-order queue.
Sony has now postponed the actual Japanese launch date and left the replacement date open.
At the same time, the absence of detail should not be converted into claims of a serious technical defect. Sony has announced no such issue, and the references to a “final quality adjustment” come through retailer communications.
For filmmakers already waiting on an FX5, September remains the timeframe increasingly suggested by retailers. Until Sony provides another official update, however, there is no confirmed new release date.
