Ricoh has officially announced the development of the RICOH GR IVx, a new premium compact camera built around a newly developed lens with a 40mm-equivalent field of view.
The Japanese announcement was published on August 27 and reveals far more than a simple teaser. Ricoh has already confirmed the lens, sensor, stabilization system, autofocus technology and several key shooting features.
A new 40mm-equivalent f/2.8 lens
The defining feature is a new 26.1mm f/2.8–f/16 GR Lens, equivalent to 40mm in the 35mm format. Its optical design uses eight elements in six groups, including three aspherical elements.
The 40mm field of view sits between the familiar 28mm wide-angle perspective and the traditional 50mm standard lens. It can suit street photography, travel, documentary work and environmental portraiture.
Compared with the 28mm-equivalent RICOH GR IV, the new IVx delivers tighter framing and a less exaggerated perspective while retaining the compact GR concept.
25.74MP APS-C sensor and five-axis stabilization
The camera uses a 23.3 x 15.5mm APS-C CMOS sensor with approximately 25.74 effective megapixels. Sensitivity runs from ISO 100 to 204800, while the sensor-shift Shake Reduction system operates across five axes.
Hybrid autofocus combines on-sensor phase detection and contrast detection. Ricoh also lists face and eye detection, tracking and the Snap Focus options that have become essential to many GR street photographers.
4K video and 53GB of internal storage
The RICOH GR IVx will record 4K video at 30p or 24p and Full HD at up to 60p. Recording is limited to 25 minutes or 4GB per clip and may stop if the internal temperature rises.
Storage includes about 53GB of internal memory plus a microSD, microSDHC or microSDXC slot with UHS-I support. Still-image formats include 14-bit DNG RAW and JPEG.
Release timing
Ricoh currently plans to release the camera in winter 2026 or later. Pricing has not been announced, and the company notes that specifications remain subject to change before the final launch.
Production of the current RICOH GR IIIx, GR IIIx HDF and GR IIIx Urban Edition is expected to end with October 2026 shipments in Japan because of component availability. Timelines in other markets may differ.
An exterior prototype is already on display at GR SPACE TOKYO. Alongside the GR IV Monochrome and GR IV HDF, the IVx shows Ricoh building a broader family around its latest GR platform.
What it means for photographers
The GR IVx targets photographers who want the speed, discretion and portability of a GR but prefer a more natural and slightly tighter perspective than 28mm. A 40mm lens can serve as an everyday single-focal-length solution without requiring a second camera system.
The major unanswered question is price. With the lens, sensor and core features already confirmed, the final announcement will be judged mainly on cost, availability and the additional functions Ricoh says it will reveal later.
