DaVinci Resolve 21.1 brings a native MCP server to the Studio edition, allowing AI assistants such as Claude, Claude Code and ChatGPT Codex to perform real tasks inside projects through natural-language instructions.
Blackmagic Design announced DaVinci Resolve 21.1 on September 8, 2026, delivering more than 100 new tools and controls, AI assistant integration, broader still-image format support, multicam editing improvements, new HDR capabilities, additional Fusion tools and expanded scripting.
The biggest change is not the addition of another built-in AI tool. With DaVinci Resolve Studio’s native MCP server, external AI assistants can now communicate with Resolve and act on a project, translating natural-language instructions into tasks such as media organization, settings changes, highlight-edit creation and rendering.
The key development is MCP, not one specific AI assistant
The new feature is not an exclusive Claude integration. Blackmagic specifically names Claude, Claude Code and ChatGPT Codex as examples of AI assistants that can connect to DaVinci Resolve Studio 21.1 through its new MCP server. The company uses the wording “AI assistants such as,” which matters: the architecture is based on an open protocol rather than a closed integration with a single AI provider.
The Model Context Protocol, or MCP, was originally introduced by Anthropic as an open standard for connecting AI applications with external data and tools. An MCP server can expose information and specific functions to a compatible AI client, allowing a model to go beyond text responses and call tools or perform actions.
In Resolve’s case, that distinction is important. The new feature should not simply be described as “Claude coming to DaVinci Resolve.” Resolve is gaining a standardized bridge to AI assistants, while Claude, Claude Code and ChatGPT Codex are the solutions Blackmagic currently names.
What AI assistants can do inside Resolve
In Blackmagic’s examples, users can ask an AI assistant to analyze a project, organize media in the media pool, adjust settings and start batch renders using everyday conversational language.
The company goes further by describing the creation of highlight edits from long-form video, removal of unwanted clips and rendering of final deliverables. These are workflows that go beyond a simple chatbot conversation and enter real stages of post-production.
The practical benefit is mainly found in repetitive processes. Sorting media, preparing a first edit, changing presets and producing multiple renders can require many small operations. With MCP, part of that sequence can instead be expressed as a goal in natural language.
That does not mean an AI assistant gains unlimited control over the entire application. What it can do depends on the functions and tools exposed by Resolve, while MCP itself includes a model in which users retain control over access and actions.
Why this approach differs from existing AI tools
DaVinci Resolve already includes numerous artificial-intelligence tools through the DaVinci AI Neural Engine. The difference with MCP is that AI is no longer simply a specialized feature operating inside Resolve. The assistant acts more like an orchestration layer: it can receive a broader request and use available application functions to complete multiple steps.
For editors, studios and creators working with large volumes of material, this direction may prove more significant than another AI effect. The central question shifts from “what can AI generate?” to “which parts of a real production workflow can it handle reliably and under controlled conditions?”
Scripting becomes even more important
Alongside MCP, DaVinci Resolve 21.1 adds 20 new capabilities to the Scripting API. These include creating and flattening multicam clips, triggering multicam SmartSwitch, auto-aligning clips, adding transitions, managing fades and speed changes, audio normalization, render presets, project-setting presets, media cloning and access to transcriptions with speaker and timing information.
These additions are particularly relevant when combined with AI assistants because they broaden the range of work that can be automated.
There is also an important change: advanced scripting now requires DaVinci Resolve Studio, while Python 2 support has been removed. Version 21.1 also adds built-in Python support for console scripting.
Photo Page, multicam, HDR and Fusion
AI assistant integration is only part of version 21.1. Blackmagic says the update includes more than 100 new tools and controls across the application.
The Photo Page expands native still-image format support for Fujifilm GFX and X series cameras, Leica SL models and the Sony Alpha 7R VI. Image parameters can now be controlled from the Inspector using Blackmagic’s color panels, while ResolveFX Sky Replacement support has been expanded to still photographs.
In multicam editing, new shortcuts provide control over as many as 25 camera angles, while track-selection shortcuts now extend to 32 tracks. The update also adds a timeline viewer multicam mode, splitting multicam clips at timecode gaps, an updated trim editor and Inspector presets.
For colorists, MultiMaster trim now supports separate trim passes for Dolby Vision, HDR10+ and HDR Vivid, allowing different HDR deliverables to be adjusted independently. New color-space support includes GoPro Log, Leica L-Log, DJI D-Gamut2 and D-Log2, and Vivo Wide Gamut and Log.
Fusion gains more than 25 new Krokodove tools for shape and 3D workflows, including Connect 3D, Heightfield Create 3D, Tube Create 3D and new 3D Region tools.
Project compatibility requires attention
The upgrade requires caution in environments where different computers or collaborators are still using older releases. According to the release notes reviewed by CineD, project libraries remain compatible with DaVinci Resolve 20.3.2, but a project created or opened in 21.1 can no longer be opened again in 20.3.2.
Blackmagic recommends backing up the project library as well as individual important projects before such an upgrade. Backward compatibility has also been relevant in previous releases, including DaVinci Resolve 21.0.3 previously covered by PTTL.
Availability and price
DaVinci Resolve 21.1 is available now as a free software update, and the standard edition of DaVinci Resolve remains available at no cost. The native MCP server and AI-assistant connectivity are DaVinci Resolve Studio 21.1 capabilities.
Blackmagic lists DaVinci Resolve Studio 21 at €255 on several European regional sites, while pricing varies by country — its German official site, for example, lists a different price. No separate official Greek price was identified, so €255 should not be treated as a single final price across Europe.

Version 21.1 continues Resolve’s major expansion
DaVinci Resolve 21 had already expanded the application significantly with the Photo Page, new AI tools, additional motion graphics and new immersive workflows. Version 21.1 shows the next stage of that strategy: rather than only adding individual AI functions, Blackmagic is beginning to let external assistants combine tools and automation within the same production environment.

What we think
The most important aspect of DaVinci Resolve 21.1 is not that it supports Claude or Codex individually. It is that Blackmagic is putting a native MCP server into one of the major professional post-production environments and creating an official bridge between AI assistants and real editing, media-management and rendering tools. How reliably and creatively these assistants will be able to handle complex projects remains to be demonstrated in real-world use, but the direction is considerably more substantial than adding another AI chatbot or effect.
