ShiftCam has introduced the X.Series SuperZoom 2x and 3.5x, two external telephoto lenses for smartphone periscope cameras that reach roughly 350mm equivalent on the iPhone 17 Pro and 420mm on the Galaxy S26 Ultra.

The lenses do not replace the phone camera and are not mounted over the main 1x sensor. They attach in front of a telephoto or periscope module through ShiftCam’s S.Mount system and optically multiply its existing focal length. The line includes a more flexible 2x and the longer 3.5x.

The mobile-photography value is real because the system does not rely only on digital cropping. At the same time, these focal lengths bring familiar super-telephoto restrictions: amplified shake, a narrow field of view, strict alignment, a need for good light and an eight-metre minimum focus distance on the 3.5x.

How the 350mm and 420mm figures are calculated

The 3.5x label describes optical multiplication of the phone’s telephoto camera. On the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max, ShiftCam calculates about 350mm equivalent when the lens is mounted on the 4x tele camera. The 2x is described as approximately 192 to 200mm, depending on the reference and model.

On the Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra, where the periscope camera is roughly equivalent to 120mm, the same 3.5x multiplication theoretically reaches 420mm. This is a full-frame-equivalent field-of-view figure; it does not turn the phone into a full-frame camera with a physical 420mm lens. Resolution, aperture and overall performance still depend on the phone module and add-on optic.

Inside the X.Series 3.5x SuperZoom

The 3.5x measures approximately 47.6mm in diameter and 65mm long, weighs 190 grams and uses recycled aluminium. Its optical design comprises 12 elements in six groups, fluorite crystal and nine coating layers on each side of every element, according to ShiftCam. The claimed field of view is seven degrees and distortion is below one per cent.

The specification table lists 336mm focal length for its reference combination, while the FAQ promotes about 350mm on the iPhone 17 Pro/Pro Max. This difference is why final equivalence should be treated as dependent on the smartphone, active tele camera and app crop rather than one fixed number for every phone.

The eight-metre minimum focus distance is crucial. This is not a lens for close portraits, everyday objects or macro without a converter. It is intended for wildlife, sport, events, architectural details and distant landscapes.

What the 2x SuperZoom offers

The 2x preserves a wider field of view and is easier to use for action, events, urban scenes and environmental portraits at a distance. On the iPhone 17 Pro, ShiftCam places it around 200mm equivalent, well beyond the native telephoto but less demanding than the 3.5x. Minimum focus is about six metres.

For many users, the 2x may be the more practical choice. At 350 or 420mm, even small hand movement shifts the framing dramatically, while at about 200mm composition and subject tracking remain more manageable.

S.Mount and real compatibility

X.Series requires a ShiftCam S.Mount case or Universal S.Mount, sold separately. The broad “works with all smartphones” language refers to the mounting concept, not a guarantee of flawless results on every device. Users need a dedicated tele/periscope camera, correct alignment and confirmation through the official compatibility information.

It is also essential to know which module is active. Many phones automatically switch from the telephoto to the main camera in low light or at close distances. If that happens while the add-on lens sits over the tele module, the phone may crop the wrong sensor or show an unusable frame.

Apps that lock the tele camera

ShiftCam is developing the ShiftCam One app. Until it is available, the company recommends apps that allow manual selection and locking of the tele camera, including Project Indigo, Halide, ProCamera, Adobe Lightroom, Blackmagic Camera and Final Cut Pro. A native camera app may work, but automatic module switching remains a risk.

For video, locking the camera, exposure and focus is even more important. Long focal lengths amplify every vibration, so a monopod, tripod or gimbal may be necessary, especially in lower light.

Filters, macro converters and older accessories

The new line uses an M43 front thread for X.Series filters and macro converters. ShiftCam says up to four macro converters can be stacked for very high magnification, although that is a separate optical configuration that requires its own quality assessment.

M43 is not the same as the M37 system used by the older 240mm Super Zoom. Owners should not assume their previous filters or converters transfer to X.Series. PTTL’s test of the earlier ShiftCam 240mm with an iPhone 17 Pro Max remains useful context for the practical demands of extreme mobile telephoto shooting.

Price and availability in Europe and Greece

Preorders are open through the official store. Reported preorder pricing is $256 for the 2x, rising to $269 later. The 3.5x is $351 during preorder and $369.90 afterward. The first batch is scheduled to ship during the week of September 9, with limited allocation and a second batch expected near the end of October.

What we think

X.Series is more interesting as a real photographic tool than as a zoom number. Optical multiplication can preserve more detail than aggressive digital cropping, but at 350–420mm quality depends completely on light, support, the correct camera module and precise alignment. The 3.5x creates the headline; the 2x will probably be the more usable choice for more creators.
