The Chios Photography Club is presenting the group exhibition “Unsent Letters” through August 31, 2026, turning photography into a medium for things that were not said when they could have been.

The exhibition opened on Thursday, August 13 at 8:00 p.m. and is now underway at Perivoli, 5 Argenti Street, in Kampos, Chios, featuring members of the Chios Photography Club. The Club introduces its theme with a direct invitation: “Say what you have to say. Don’t wait.”

What makes the exhibition particularly interesting is its decision to treat photography not simply as a record, but as an act of communication. The images take the place of letters that arrived late, were never sent or could not have been expressed in any other way, giving participating photographers a common theme that is specific enough to connect their work while remaining open enough to accommodate very different personal narratives.

Photography as an “unsent letter”

The title “Unsent Letters” describes the core of the project. It refers to thoughts, emotions, memories, desires and stories whose communication was prevented by shyness, procrastination or simply the absence of the right medium and the right moment.

The recipient does not necessarily have to be a specific person. Such a photographic “letter” may be addressed to someone who left or stayed, to someone familiar or unknown, or even to the photographer. In this way, the image can become both a confession and an open message, allowing viewers to recognise elements of their own experiences within it.

Why the theme is particularly interesting for photographers

For photographers, a theme like this fundamentally changes the starting point of the creative process. The first question is not about technique, equipment or even the physical subject in front of the camera, but about the message the finished photograph is meant to convey.

This leaves room for different photographic languages while requiring each creator to consider the relationship between intention and interpretation. A letter has a sender, a potential recipient and something that needs to be said. In photography, however, viewers do not necessarily have all of that information. The distance between what the photographer intended to say and what the visitor ultimately reads in the image therefore becomes part of the work itself.

Perivoli and Kampos as part of the experience

The choice of Perivoli in Kampos adds a distinctive spatial context to the exhibition. Kampos is a characteristic residential and agricultural area of Chios, known for its orchards and historic mansions, which remain central elements of its identity. The Municipality of Chios’ official digital presentation of Kampos similarly highlights the relationship between orchards, architecture, the environment and the area’s social life.

This is not the first time the Chios Photography Club has used Perivoli for a group presentation. In 2022, the same venue hosted the exhibitions “Topos” and “Anoikeio”, with the latter also exploring more internal and difficult-to-express aspects of human thought and emotion.

What we think

“Unsent Letters” is built around a simple but creatively demanding idea: “what do I want to say?” comes before “what do I want to photograph?”. For a group exhibition, that approach has particular value because the same starting point can lead to many different personal interpretations. That is also one of photography’s most compelling qualities as a form of communication: an image can begin as an entirely personal message and ultimately mean something different to every viewer.
