The HONOR Robot Phone has moved from an eye-catching concept to a commercial product, combining a 4DoF mechanical gimbal, a 200MP main camera, ARRI technology and AI features capable of automatically tracking subjects.
HONOR officially launched the Robot Phone in China on August 12, 2026, confirming that the device with the retractable motorized camera was not merely a demonstration prototype. Pre-orders began the same day, while general sales in the Chinese market are scheduled for August 18.
The significance of the Robot Phone lies primarily in HONOR’s attempt to integrate mechanical stabilization and controlled camera movement directly into a smartphone, capabilities that have typically required a separate gimbal or a different type of device. At the same time, the ARRI partnership brings tools such as LogC3, Wide Gamut 3 and ARRI Looks closer to a complete mobile filmmaking workflow.
The mechanical gimbal is the central feature
The main camera sits on a fully motorized system that deploys from the back of the device. HONOR describes it as a 4DoF system, meaning four degrees of freedom, with pan, tilt, roll and flip movement. Although stabilization relies on a three-axis mechanical mechanism, the additional deployment mechanism allows the camera to dramatically change its orientation.
According to HONOR, the Titanium Agile Gimbal consists of more than 100 precision components, is produced through 60 manufacturing processes and is supported by more than 100 related patents. Its gimbal motor weighs 2.6 grams and can reach movement speeds of up to 360 degrees per second in specific modes.
This mechanical movement is not used only for stabilization. The camera can automatically change angle, follow people and other subjects, and perform movements resembling those of a small robotic camera operator.
A 200MP main camera and two additional high-end modules
The central Agile Gimbal Main Camera has a 200MP resolution, a 1/1.28-inch sensor and an f/1.6 lens. Mechanical stabilization is combined with OIS, creating a system designed primarily for stable video and automated camera movement.
Alongside it is another 200MP periscope telephoto camera with a 1/1.4-inch sensor, f/2.6 aperture, 2.7x optical zoom and OIS. The system is completed by a 50MP ultrawide camera with an f/2.0 aperture and a 122-degree field of view.
The motorized gimbal can also be used for automated panoramic photography. The device supports 3×3 grid and 180-degree panoramas by physically moving the camera rather than relying solely on the user rotating the phone.
ARRI enters the mobile filmmaking workflow
One of the Robot Phone’s most notable elements is the partnership between HONOR and ARRI. The device supports 10-bit ARRI LogC3 in ARRI CINEMA mode, ARRI Wide Gamut 3 and ARRI Looks, while also using HONOR’s H1 Image Chip for image processing.
The imaging pipeline processes data in 14-bit 4:4:4 and can output 10-bit LogC3 and 4:2:2 video, with the aim of retaining more usable image information for color grading. HONOR also lists DaVinci Resolve compatibility and support for ARRI LUTs in post-production.
For more conventional recording, the device can capture 4K video at up to 120 fps. PetaPixel also reports 4K/60p recording with LogC3 and Full HD video at up to 240 fps.
AI tracking and a phone that moves by itself
The Robot Phone goes beyond mechanical stabilization. Through MagicOS and YOYO Robot Mode, the camera can use subject recognition, gesture recognition and voice-source localization to automatically turn toward the user.
AI Subject Tracking is designed for uses including vlogging, livestreaming and video calls, allowing a person to remain in frame while moving. Modes such as Tilt Lock, FPV, FPV Vertical and AI SpinShot are also available, along with hands-free controls for deploying the camera and capturing images.
YOYO Robot Mode also uses gimbal movement as a form of physical interaction. The device can respond to gestures, move the camera like a small “head” and perform movements based on context or music.
Early demonstrations show impressive stabilization
PetaPixel had seen the Robot Phone before its commercial launch. In one demonstration, a Robot Phone and an iPhone were placed on a moving rig, with the HONOR device producing visibly more stable live footage.
In another test, a person walked on a treadmill while recording video, with the mechanical gimbal significantly reducing visible motion. During demonstrations involving dancers, the camera was able to follow them and even alter its tilt for more dynamic framing.
HONOR has also placed the phone in the hands of filmmakers, including Oscar-winning Chilean cinematographer Claudio Miranda. Although such footage demonstrates what the gimbal can do, final image quality cannot be fully assessed from compressed online videos alone.
Flagship hardware behind the unusual camera
Beyond the gimbal, the Robot Phone carries the specifications of a modern flagship. It uses the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 and has a 7,060mAh silicon-carbon battery supporting up to 120W wired and 50W wireless charging.
The display is a 6.31-inch LTPO OLED with an adaptive 1-120Hz refresh rate and a claimed peak brightness of up to 6,800 nits. HONOR also lists 4,320Hz PWM dimming.
The available configurations combine 12GB of RAM with 512GB of storage or 16GB of RAM with 1TB.
Pricing and availability
The base 12GB+512GB version costs 9,999 yuan in China, while the 16GB+1TB version is priced at 12,999 yuan. Pre-orders began on August 12, with general sales starting on August 18, 2026.
No specific timetable has yet been announced for a commercial release of the Robot Phone outside China.

What we think
The HONOR Robot Phone is interesting primarily because it turns a feature normally found in a separate accessory into a structural part of the smartphone. Its real value will not be determined by how impressive the camera looks when it deploys, but by whether the gimbal remains reliable, fast and practical in everyday use, and whether the resulting image quality justifies the added complexity and price.
