Tamron has introduced the 12-20mm F2.8 Di III VXD G2, a fast ultra-wide zoom lens for Sony E and Nikon Z full-frame mirrorless cameras.
The new lens, identified as Model A084, covers focal lengths from 12 to 20mm while maintaining a constant maximum aperture of F2.8 throughout the zoom range. The Sony E-mount version is scheduled for release on July 30, 2026, followed by the Nikon Z-mount version on August 27, 2026.
The announcement is particularly relevant to landscape, architectural, interior and astrophotographers, as the lens combines the extremely wide 12mm perspective with a bright aperture, relatively low weight and an advanced autofocus system.
An extremely wide 12mm field of view
At the wide end, the lens provides a diagonal angle of view of 121°58′ on a full-frame sensor. This coverage allows photographers to capture expansive scenes while emphasising depth and perspective.
The 12-20mm range makes the lens suitable for landscapes, confined interiors, architecture and night-sky photography. Its constant F2.8 aperture also supports low-light shooting and the use of faster shutter speeds.
Optical design for sharp frame edges
The optical construction consists of 17 elements arranged in 12 groups. It includes one XGM element, three GM aspherical elements and multiple special optical elements.
According to Tamron, the design reduces chromatic aberration and loss of sharpness near the edges of the frame. Particular attention has been given to correcting sagittal coma flare, an aberration that can distort bright points near the edges of astrophotography images.
Compact body with professional controls
The Sony E-mount version measures 119.3mm in length and weighs 570 grams. The Nikon Z version is slightly larger, with a length of 121.3mm and a weight of 585 grams.
Despite its compact dimensions, the lens includes switches and control rings aimed at demanding users. It also supports TAMRON Lens Utility, allowing selected functions to be customised for still photography and video.
Fast focusing with a VXD linear motor
Autofocus is driven by Tamron’s VXD linear motor mechanism. The system is designed to provide fast, accurate and quiet operation, making it useful for both stills and video recording.
The minimum focusing distance is 0.18 metres at 12mm and 0.28 metres at 20mm. Maximum magnification reaches 1:5.8 at the wide end and 1:9.1 at the long end of the zoom range.
Twelve-blade aperture and rear filter holder
The Tamron 12-20mm F2.8 features a 12-blade circular diaphragm and a minimum aperture of F16. The company states that the aperture remains almost circular for up to two stops below the maximum setting.
Due to the curved front element, the lens does not have a conventional front filter thread. Instead, an integrated filter holder is located at the rear of the lens.
The petal-shaped hood is permanently integrated into the body. The package includes front and rear caps, along with a soft protective wrapping cloth.
Protection against moisture and dirt
The construction includes moisture-resistant sealing, while the front element features a fluorine coating. This coating is designed to make water, oil and dirt easier to remove from the optical surface.

What we think
The combination of a 12mm focal length, constant F2.8 aperture and relatively low weight makes the new Tamron an interesting option for astrophotography, landscapes and demanding interior photography. The integrated rear filter holder and VXD system reinforce its practical character, although its final assessment will depend on real-world optical performance and retail pricing.
