A marriage proposal at the historic open-air Cine Rex in Samos became a cinematic surprise that moved thousands of people.

Iasonas planned a marriage proposal for Angela for about six months, with the help of filmmaker Michalis, so that the big question would appear before her on the screen of an open-air cinema.

The story matters because it shows how a personal moment, when designed with authenticity and emotion, can go beyond a couple’s private life and touch a wider audience.

The marriage proposal that became a cinematic experience

The idea for a marriage proposal on the big screen had been in Michalis’ mind since 2023. As a filmmaker, he had always wanted to see something of his own projected in a cinema, and whenever possible he tries to bring that experience to the people he works with.

Iasonas was ultimately the person with whom the idea could become reality. The plan began as a “conspiracy” in early 2026 and turned into a marriage proposal at the open-air Cine Rex in Mytilinioi, Samos.

The location was not chosen by chance. REX has been operating since 1928 and is one of the island’s most distinctive cinemas, with history, atmosphere and people who, as Michalis describes, truly love the stories that come to life on the big screen.

Michalis’ interview

How was the idea for this marriage proposal born and who had the original inspiration?

As a filmmaker, I had always dreamed of seeing something of my own playing on the big screen. So, whenever I get the chance, whether it is a commercial or a wedding, I try to convince my clients to experience it in a cinema. The idea for a marriage proposal in this way had been in my mind since 2023. The only thing I was waiting for was the right groom!

When did Iasonas contact you and how long did it take to plan the surprise?

I had suggested the idea to him in 2025, and in early 2026 he called me so we could start the “conspiracy”. It took us some time to settle on the script, because we wanted it to be authentic, to be “Iasonas” and not something foreign to his character. We worked with local director and scriptwriter Konstantinos Fragkoulis, who gave us the basic structure. From that point on, everything else is Iasonas. We had the final result ready about two months before the big screening.

Why was this specific open-air cinema in Samos chosen?

The open-air Cine Rex is a true jewel for the island. A 98-year-old cinema in Mytilinioi, with character, history and people who run it with care from generation to generation. It was the ideal location, because the owners, and I say this romantically but it is true, have a heart that beats for the community and for stories worth bringing to life on the big screen.

What do we know about the history of the cinema and how much did it contribute to the final result?

REX started in 1928 by the great-grandfather of the current owner, Orestis. It is a place full of character: small trees, basil plants, old film machines, tables and chairs arranged in a friendly, communal way. Until recently they also offered the legendary doughnuts made by the grandmother after the interval, a tradition that unfortunately stopped. In any case, the place was absolutely fitting for our idea.

How many people knew the plan and how difficult was it to keep it secret?

This is interesting! Iasonas and Angela work together every day as civil engineers. For about six months, Iasonas’ behavior changed completely: he hid his phone, found excuses to leave work for the organization, the shoot, checking the venue and rehearsing there. Angela, who had been expecting the proposal for some time, began wondering what was happening. The night of the proposal was a relief for both of them.

How was the screening organized without Angela suspecting anything?

On the day of the screening, Prada 2 was playing. Iasonas managed, through a mutual friend, to make Angela want to go to the cinema without even suggesting it himself. I was at the venue one hour earlier, set up three cameras and a light saber near the reserved table. When they arrived, I greeted them and told her that I was filming material for the cinema’s 100th anniversary. The perfect cover.

What were the biggest challenges?

During the shoot in Spatharaioi, the biggest difficulty was finding time for Iasonas to “escape” from work. This limited us in terms of location and timing for good light. I remember complaining to him about the frame, the light, the details, and him answering: “Michalis, relax with the artistic stuff. The meaning and the emotion are what matter. It will turn out amazing anyway.” How right was he? As for the night of the proposal, things were not that difficult. We only needed a bit of synchronization so that everything would go correctly. Orestis puts the “shows” in order, 4 trailers -> 2 commercials -> Iasonas gets up for popcorn and chocolate wafers -> I put a microphone on him -> he waits -> I go and sit with the 4th camera next to Angela.

Were there any technical difficulties?

Only the very low lighting. The C70 was recording at ISO 25600, we are talking orange-sized grain, but with the AI denoiser it became spotless! The two DJI Action 5 cameras gave a muddy result, but I got the footage I needed. The only thing we did not manage was the original idea of playing the video after the interval for a bigger surprise. Orestis explained to me that the projector does not allow such scheduling.

Which moment will you remember the most?

The shoot in Spatharaioi was very sweet, with Iasonas trying, getting emotional, laughing at his mistakes. I have collected incredible bloopers for their wedding video next year! At the cinema, during Angela’s reaction, unfortunately I could not feel anything. I was behind the hidden camera, stressed not to make a mistake. It was very dark, manual focus was difficult on the small screen of the GH5S and there was very little time to expose correctly and frame the shot. What I will never forget was the crying I did in the editing chair. As I also told Iasonas: “I watched it 500 times to make it, and 500 times I cried.”

If you had to describe the experience in one phrase?

Restore faith in humanity.

If you had known it would go viral, would you have changed anything?

The video surpassed, within one day, the views of any other video I have made in the ten years I have been involved in filmmaking. This shows what people want to see: something real, heartfelt, presented in a fresh way, even if it is not technically perfect. So definitely not, I would not change anything. Iasonas and Angela gave us something priceless. I thank them and wish them a wonderful life together.

What we think

The story of Iasonas and Angela shows that the power of a video is not always found in equipment or technical perfection, but in the intention behind the image. When filmmaking serves a real human moment, the result can become much bigger than a simple viral clip.
