Two sisters, one house, and one of cinema’s darkest rivalries

The story follows Jane and Blanche Hudson, sisters with a shared past in show business. Confined to the same house, their jealousy, dependence and struggle for control turn everyday interactions into a psychological nightmare.

Bette Davis plays Jane, a former child star unable to let go of her fame, opposite Joan Crawford as Blanche. Aldrich uses black-and-white imagery, enclosed interiors and dark humor to build tension without relying on constant onscreen violence. The film earned five Academy Award nominations.

What we think

Baby Jane is worth experiencing on a cinema screen for the way it turns a limited interior into an entire world. Its monochrome imagery, shadows, faces and the physical distance between the two leads all carry the suspense. For filmmakers and photographers, it is a reminder of how much a carefully composed image can communicate without elaborate effects.

It is also a fitting Halloween selection without following the formula of a conventional horror film. The unease comes from the characters and the secrets between them. Free admission makes this a particularly accessible opportunity for a new audience to discover a film whose approach to psychological suspense still feels instructive.
