A stop for a photograph in the Italian Dolomites ended in tragedy when 36-year-old American tourist Michelle Alejandra Rubio Leiva slipped and fell approximately 300 metres near Forcella Pordoi, losing her life.

The accident happened on Saturday, October 17, 2026, near Canazei at an altitude of about 2,750 metres. She had travelled from Florida for a holiday with her family and was visiting the Sass Pordoi area.

She stepped off the trail to photograph the view

Michelle, who worked in communications and marketing, had reached the area near the cable-car station with her relatives. During the excursion she left the trail to find a panoramic viewpoint and take a photograph. She lost her footing on an exposed section and fell down the mountainside.

Family members, including her sister, witnessed the fall. Forcella Pordoi, in the Sella mountain group, is known for its dramatic rock faces and sweeping Dolomites scenery.

The rescue operation

People who witnessed the fall contacted the emergency number 112 at around noon. Soccorso Alpino e Speleologico Trentino activated the Alta Val di Fassa rescue team and called for a helicopter. A rescuer already nearby provided the crew with precise coordinates.

Medical personnel arrived at around 12:30 p.m., but a doctor pronounced the 36-year-old dead. Her relatives were flown to Canazei before rescuers recovered her body. The operation ended at approximately 2:30 p.m.

When the better composition is near the edge

Moving a few metres for a better angle can become dangerous on rocky ground with steep drops. In a separate accident in Oregon in August 2026, a 20-year-old man died after entering a closed area to take photographs near South Falls.

Summit images and spectacular landscapes on social media rarely show the conditions and preparation involved. The discussion about rising mountain rescues and the so-called Instagram effect highlights how easy it is to underestimate the terrain when attention shifts entirely to getting the photograph.

What we think

Anyone who has photographed a dramatic landscape with a camera or phone knows the temptation to take just a couple more steps to remove something distracting from the frame. On a mountain, those same steps can take you off firm ground onto loose rock, with no room to recover from a slip.

The tragedy at Forcella Pordoi is a harsh reminder to choose a safe position first and work on the composition second. If the photograph does not work from there, change the angle, change lenses or leave the shot behind. That is a tiny loss compared with what is at stake.

Those of us who share pictures from demanding locations can also show the safe approach occasionally, rather than only the spectacular final frame. That gives useful context to anyone hoping to visit the same place.
