Canon has officially announced the EOS R8 Mark II, a compact full-frame mirrorless camera with a 24.2MP sensor, up to 7.5 stops of in-body stabilisation, 40fps shooting and 6K-oversampled 4K/60p video.
The second-generation EOS R8 keeps the idea of a small, lightweight full-frame body but fixes one of the original model’s biggest omissions: the lack of IBIS. It also gains a new multi-controller joystick, improved Dual Pixel CMOS AF II, pre-continuous shooting and additional stills and video tools.
For creators, the upgrade goes beyond stabilisation. The EOS R8 Mark II records uncropped 4K up to 60p oversampled from 6K, Full HD up to 180p, and supports Canon Log 3, Custom Picture, Look Files/LUTs and four-channel audio.

24.2MP full frame and up to 7.5 stops of IBIS
Canon uses a 24.2MP full-frame CMOS sensor and DIGIC X processor. The new In-Body Image Stabilization system provides up to 7.5 stops of correction at the centre and up to 7.0 stops at the periphery under Canon’s CIPA 2024 test conditions.
IBIS is the most significant practical upgrade over the EOS R8, particularly for handheld low-light work and video. With compatible optically stabilised RF lenses, the camera can use Coordinated IS.
40fps, pre-continuous shooting and a larger buffer
With the electronic shutter, the EOS R8 Mark II reaches 40 frames per second. Pre-continuous shooting can store up to 20 images from the half-second before the shutter button is fully pressed.
Canon also quotes a larger buffer than the EOS R8: up to 73 RAW files or 190 JPEGs in a single 40fps burst, depending on conditions and lens.
Dual Pixel CMOS AF II and Register People Priority
Dual Pixel CMOS AF II detects and tracks people, animals and vehicles in stills and video. Register People Priority lets photographers save faces so the camera can prioritise them in a crowd.
The redesigned rear controls now include a multi-controller joystick for faster AF-point positioning and menu navigation.
6K-oversampled 4K/60p, Full HD/180p and Canon Log 3
For video, the EOS R8 Mark II records full-width UHD 4K up to 60p oversampled from 6K and Full HD up to 180p for slow motion. It supports Canon Log 3, HDR PQ and HLG, plus Custom Picture and Look Files for a more flexible grading workflow.
Recording options include XF-HEVC S and XF-AVC S with 10-bit 4:2:2 or 4:2:0 depending on the selected mode. Canon also lists four-channel audio plus separate microphone and headphone terminals.
New body, one UHS-II SD slot and LP-E17 battery
The body measures approximately 131.4 × 90.0 × 79.7mm and weighs around 546g with battery and card. Canon describes it as the lightest full-frame EOS body with IBIS at the time of announcement.
The camera uses one UHS-II-compatible SD card slot and the compact LP-E17 battery. It also includes a 2.36-million-dot EVF, 3.0-inch vari-angle touchscreen, tally lamp, 2.4/5GHz Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 5.3 and USB-C for transfer, charging, livestreaming and webcam use.

What we think
The EOS R8 Mark II does not chase higher resolution or a faster headline burst rate. Its biggest gains are practical: IBIS, a joystick, a larger buffer, pre-continuous shooting and a more mature video workflow. For photographers and hybrid creators who wanted the compact full-frame idea of the R8 without giving up stabilisation and control, this is a substantially more complete package.
