Giorgos Arvanitis was born in Dilofos, Fthiotida, and studied electrical and mechanical engineering in secondary technical education before turning to cinema. His professional career began on the sets of Finos Film.
According to Photometria, his body of work exceeds 112 feature films and includes 15 Greek and international awards. His filmography includes collaborations with filmmakers such as Theo Angelopoulos, Pantelis Voulgaris, Michael Cacoyannis, Jules Dassin and Stavros Tsiolis, as well as Volker Schlöndorff, Agnieszka Holland, the Dardenne brothers, Catherine Breillat, Marco Bellocchio and Marco Ferreri.
