One of the most important films in cinema history is about to be presented in 4K resolution for the first time.

Warner Bros. Discovery Home Entertainment has announced that Gone With the Wind will be released on November 3, 2026, on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray and in digital format, following a new restoration of its picture and sound.

The edition is particularly significant for collectors and fans of classic cinema, as the 1939 production has never previously been released on a physical 4K disc, while the new transfer will support High Dynamic Range technology for the first time.

Three Different Editions

The film will be available in three physical editions: a standard 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, a Steelbook edition and a special collector’s edition.

The collector’s edition will be released exclusively through Walmart in the United States, while the digital version will be offered through major movie purchasing platforms.

WaterTower Music is also planning a new vinyl release of the film’s score in fall 2026. It will be the first reissue of the soundtrack in more than 40 years.

New Picture and Sound Restoration

The new edition is based on a recent restoration designed to reproduce the original colors more accurately, improve image detail and enhance audio fidelity.

The film retains its 233-minute running time, while the disc will include English, French and Spanish audio, together with corresponding subtitle options.

The New Bonus Material

The release will be accompanied by three newly produced featurettes.

The first examines the lasting cinematic influence of Gone With the Wind and its place in popular culture.

The second offers a look at the restoration and preservation process, featuring the specialists who worked on the film’s picture and sound.

The third focuses on Scarlett O’Hara and Vivien Leigh’s performance, examining how the character stood apart during her era.

A Historic Motion Picture Production

Gone With the Wind premiered in 1939 and stars Clark Gable, Vivien Leigh, Olivia de Havilland, Leslie Howard and Hattie McDaniel.

The film received ten Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress.

In 1989, it was included among the first films selected by the Library of Congress for preservation in the United States National Film Registry.

You will find it here.

What We Think

The first 4K release of Gone With the Wind is an important development for the preservation and presentation of classic cinema. The key question will be whether the restoration retains the film’s photochemical texture and the character of its original colors without excessive digital processing.
