The Greek Society of Cinematographers participated in the 5th “Theodoros Angelopoulos” International Short Film Festival in Aigio, presenting the distinctions for best cinematography.

The Greek Society of Cinematographers / GSC took part in the festival again this year, continuing its steady support for short film creators through the Best Cinematography Award.

The distinction is significant because it highlights the role of the image in shaping cinematic storytelling, from light and framing to atmosphere and the emotional intensity of a film.

The GSC jury

This year’s GSC jury consisted of regular members Christina Moumouri, Giorgos Argyroiliopoulos and Evgenios Dionysopoulos.

The jury evaluated the festival’s films with a focus on cinematography and the contribution of photography to the overall dramaturgy of each work.

Special Mention to Ilya Sapeha for MAJONEZE

The Special Mention was awarded to Ilya Sapeha for the cinematography of the film MAJONEZE, directed by Giulia Grandinetti.

According to the jury’s statement, Ilya Sapeha’s cinematography was described as bold and assured, with personality, consistency and a strong Balkan identity. The jury highlighted the way the image captures landscapes and human faces, while also pursuing light, the sun and reflections.

The film’s cinematography, as noted, does not function as decoration but stands at the core of the narrative, supporting a strong voice around women, love, violence and vulnerability.

Best Cinematography Award to Konstantin Minnich

The Best Cinematography Award was presented to Konstantin Minnich for the film MUM, directed by Julia Patey.

The jury described Konstantin Minnich’s cinematography as minimal, solid and concise, with balanced lighting contrasts in both exterior and interior shots.

Special mention was made of the use of colors and tones, which reinforce the sense of inner isolation and alienation of the protagonists. At the same time, the geometric framing of spaces was highlighted as a defining element in the development of the story.

The award was presented by the president of GSC, Giorgos Frentzos.

A discussion on light and darkness

As part of the festival, a discussion titled “Light and Darkness: A Necessary Dialogue” was also held, with the participation of cinematographers Dimitris Katsaitis GSC and Giorgos Frentzos GSC.

The discussion focused on the relationship between light and darkness as a fundamental axis of cinematic language. During the presentation, excerpts were screened from films in which Dimitris Katsaitis served as director of photography.

The audience was therefore given the opportunity to see in practice how light, darkness, framing and atmosphere shape the cinematic world. The evening concluded with a discussion with the attendees.

What we think

GSC’s presence at the festival in Aigio is a reminder of how decisive cinematography remains even within the short film format. The two distinctions show that the image is not merely a technical result, but a narrative tool capable of conveying tension, emotion and meaning in a direct and substantial way.
