Westcott has redesigned its Rapid Box Switch softboxes with the Fold-Flat range, promising setup in about one second and a nearly flat folded shape that is easier to carry between locations.
Announced on October 26, 2026, the new line includes nine sizes and shapes. Its main change is the opening and packing mechanism while retaining the Switch interchangeable mounting system.
One-second opening and push-button collapse
Two integrated rear handles let photographers unfold the softbox in a single motion. A quick-release mechanism then collapses the modifier into a slim, nearly flat profile rather than leaving it bulky in the bag.
This is particularly useful for outdoor portrait sessions, corporate headshots and productions with repeated lighting changes: less time building the setup and less space taken up in gear bags or cases.

Nine options and controlled diffusion
The range covers nine variations in different dimensions and aspect ratios, from octagonal modifiers to narrower strips and rectangular designs. The choice of shape matters: a large box can help produce a broad, soft portrait light while a strip is useful for rim lighting and keeping spill off the background.
Each version includes inner and outer diffusion panels and a 55-degree egg-crate grid. The grid narrows the beam and helps keep unwanted light off the backdrop, with no separate grid purchase needed to begin shaping the light.

Compatibility and travel
A Bowens Switch Insert and carrying case are also provided. The Switch system accepts separately sold interchangeable inserts for other compatible lights. Bowens is a widely used studio fitting, including on the 250Ws Westcott FJ250 strobe.
The thinner packed profile becomes especially useful when traveling with several modifiers, lights, stands and batteries. Outdoor crews still need to secure their setups: a large open softbox catches wind even if it is lightweight. A portable lighting kit may also involve gear such as the Westcott Photography Wagon, but a cart does not replace safe stands and appropriate ballast.

Pricing and availability
U.S. prices for the new range start at $99.90, depending on size. An official euro price or confirmed availability date for Greece was not found.
What we think
Anyone who has packed two or three large softboxes after an event or an outdoor portrait session knows that fast setup solves only half the problem. Getting everything back into the vehicle without a mountain of bulky bags can be the bigger headache. That is why the flat-folding design is more compelling to us than the one-second claim.
Including both the Bowens insert and the grid is a welcome decision. Small accessories can quickly push up the cost of a lighting kit, and having diffusion and spill control from day one is valuable, particularly when a portrait background needs careful handling.
Choosing the right size remains more important than the speed of deployment, though. A strip may make far more sense than a large octa in a tight room, while an outdoor shoot still requires properly secured lighting gear regardless of how cleverly the modifier folds.
Frequently asked questions
Are the Bowens insert and grid included?
Yes. The new Fold-Flat range includes a Bowens Switch Insert, a 55-degree grid, inner and outer diffusion panels and a carrying case.
Do these softboxes work only with Westcott lights?
No. The included Bowens Switch Insert works with compatible Bowens-mount lights. For other fittings, a separately purchased compatible Switch Insert may be required.
