Amazon introduced the Alexa Photo Frame on October 28, a digital frame that connects to Amazon Photos and uses Alexa to find and display pictures from your personal library.

How Alexa chooses the pictures

Users choose albums or specific people in the app, with new photos syncing automatically. Alexa+ can also curate the selection: Amazon says it considers faces, time and sentiment, favouring smiles and good lighting while filtering out screenshots and receipts.

The selection also follows the season, bringing holiday pictures back at the appropriate time. Users can ask for photos of a person, pet or trip using a natural description rather than searching through albums manually.

Amazon also describes showing related photographs side by side, such as similar moments at different ages, and adding voice notes that preserve the story behind an image.

A screen designed around photographs

The frame has a 10-inch touchscreen that Amazon describes as high definition and specially calibrated for photos. A semi-matte, anti-glare surface and automatic brightness sensor aim to make viewing more comfortable at home. Users can also swipe through pictures on the screen.

White matting and wooden frame options follow the look of a conventional picture frame. Automatic photo selection has precedents such as the AURA digital frame; Amazon adds voice search and integration with its own ecosystem.

Setup and sharing with the family

Initial setup requires Wi-Fi, an Amazon account and the Amazon Photos app. It starts with an on-screen QR code, and the frame uses a mains power adapter. Collaborators can be added so several family members can contribute pictures.

A gift preparation process allows photos and a personal message to be loaded in advance. A microphone disable button sits on the back, and Amazon provides controls to review and delete voice interaction history.

Price and availability

In the US, the Alexa Photo Frame starts at $199.99 in Black or $229 with real Birch or Walnut wood frames. No official European price was found.

Certain features require Alexa+, and the device includes 90 days of access. Amazon also lists Alexa+ and unlimited full-resolution photo storage as Prime benefits in markets where they are offered. These benefits should not be assumed to apply to an account in Greece.

What we think

The most useful part is giving a photo library a visible place in the home again. We keep taking pictures, but choosing and displaying them often gets postponed. Automatic syncing could be particularly helpful for families sharing everyday moments without sending each picture individually.

We would still keep a personally curated album. A technically clean picture full of smiles is not necessarily the one we want to see: a dark image or a serious portrait may have greater personal value. Automatic selection makes a useful starting point, provided its way of choosing moments works for us.

For a purchase from Greece, we would start by checking availability of the hardware and services for the specific account. With a frame that depends so heavily on the cloud, access to its features matters as much as its appearance and price.
