Giorgos Christinides presents his photography exhibition “Eleftheria” (Freedom) at Baraka Bistrot Café in Thessaloniki from 31 October to 30 November 2026, with an opening on Saturday 31 October at 20:00.

The exhibition is part of Contrast / Antithesi: Thessaloniki Photo Festival, held in the city since 2010, whose eighth edition presents 35 solo bodies of work being shown for the first time across 20 exhibition venues.

The body, the earth and the horizon

In the text accompanying the exhibition, Christinides describes a desire to lie on the earth, embrace it and stretch his body towards the four points of the horizon. Sky, soil, grass and water become points of contact in a personal relationship with nature. Freedom is connected here to the possibility of feeling part of the landscape, to the point of disappearing into it.

“I can lie on my back and take the shape of the sky,” the photographer writes. The phrase offers a way into the images: a person seeks a place within the landscape, sometimes through physical presence and sometimes through a trace.

In one of the two photographs accompanying the presentation, a path crosses the ground and curves towards the distant horizon. In the other, a white boat rests on dry land while a human shadow stretches across the sunlit terrain. Black and white emphasises textures and tonal contrasts, while curves organise the space around the viewer.

A practice spanning photography, theatre and printmaking

Giorgos Christinides was born and lives in Thessaloniki, where he works as a primary-school physical education teacher. He studied physical education and sport science at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, completed postgraduate studies in its School of Fine Arts’ Theatre Department, and earned a doctorate at Democritus University of Thrace in Motor Learning, examining the use of theatrical techniques in physical education.

He is a member and secretary-general of the board of the Association of Visual Artists of Northern Greece, a member of the Ilios visual arts workshop and of the Fotoporoi photography group. He has presented five solo photography exhibitions and participated in 16 group shows, alongside work in theatre directing, writing, painting and printmaking. In 2024, he received the First Prize in Printmaking at the association’s “Parallel Roads” competition exhibition.

He also presented “Cheironomia” (Gesture) at Baraka during Contrast 2024; he now returns to the same venue with a different photographic series.

What we think

What draws us to these two images is the way the human element changes our reading of the landscape. The shadow beside the boat brings a person into the frame without showing them directly. The path, meanwhile, gives our eyes a route to follow. The connection with nature that Christinides describes takes a specific photographic form.

For those of us who photograph landscapes, that shift is worth considering: what place do we give people in an image, even when their faces are absent? Visiting the exhibition offers a chance to see how this relationship develops from one photograph to the next and how the series works as a whole.
