Ricoh is making the professional RICOH360 THETA A1 easier to purchase by offering its 360° camera separately from its service packages.

The October 28, 2026 announcement is not the launch of a new camera: the THETA A1 was introduced in 2025. The change concerns how customers buy it and the expansion of distribution into additional markets.

From service bundles to standalone purchases

Ricoh had previously offered the THETA A1 alongside RICOH360 cloud and support services. Professionals can now buy the camera on its own and use it independently or with the RICOH360 ecosystem, depending on their workflow. This also makes it easier to integrate the camera into existing construction, inspection and facility-management applications.

Standalone sales begin in Japan on November 17, 2026, initially online and later through retailers. Ricoh is also expanding availability to the United States, Canada and Australia, while widening purchasing options and distribution channels in Europe.

A rugged design built for field conditions

The THETA A1 is the first camera in the THETA series to offer IP64-equivalent protection against dust and splashing water. It operates from −10°C to 40°C, and Ricoh says it supports extended recording with external power even at 30°C to 40°C. IP64 does not mean the camera can be submerged in water.

Startup takes approximately three seconds from a full power-off, while shutter response is about 0.3 seconds. During site inspections and repeated documentation tasks, those seconds can make a practical difference.

11K photos, 8K video and files ready to use

The camera captures 11K 360° stills (11,008 × 5,504 pixels, approximately 60 MP) as JPEG files. Video reaches 8K at up to 10 fps, while 4K recording goes up to 30 fps, with H.265 encoding. Its 8K mode is therefore aimed more at documentation than at smooth 30 fps motion capture.

Stitching and tilt correction happen inside the camera, producing JPEG and MP4 files that do not require a separate conversion stage. Built-in GPS and an electronic compass record location and shooting direction. The European product page also lists 27 GB of storage and a removable battery.

From earlier consumer-oriented choices such as the Ricoh THETA SC2 to the A1, the series now serves very different needs. The A1 emphasizes ruggedness and repeatable field capture rather than simply delivering an eye-catching 360° image.

Price and availability

The official European RICOH360 store lists the THETA A1 at €749.99 excluding VAT. That price refers to this specific European listing and is not a confirmed final retail price for Greece. Rollout in the newly covered markets will take place progressively.

What we think

The purchasing change may matter more to working professionals than another set of specifications. If you already run your own system for documenting job sites, properties or facilities, it helps to be able to buy a camera without building your entire workflow around one cloud-service bundle.

We also like Ricoh’s focus on day-to-day documentation: quick startup, ready-to-use JPEG files, location metadata, and protection against dust and water splashes. These details matter when the goal is to leave a site with a clear, organized record, not just an impressive 360° sample.

For creators focused on cinematic 360° video, though, 8K at 10 fps is a clear limitation. Photographers who depend on RAW files should also note that the A1 captures JPEG. Before buying, it is worth deciding whether you need a reliable field-documentation tool or more flexibility in post-production.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to subscribe to RICOH360 to purchase the THETA A1?

No. The new purchasing option lets you buy the camera without a bundled service package. Optional cloud services remain available separately.

Can the THETA A1 shoot 8K video at 30 fps?

No. Official specifications list up to 10 fps at 8K and up to 30 fps at 4K.

Is the Ricoh THETA A1 waterproof?

Its IP64 protection covers dust and splashing water, not submersion. Follow Ricoh’s instructions when operating in rain or difficult field conditions.
