Richard Avedon returns to the screen in a new documentary from Ron Howard: Netflix has released the trailer and confirmed a November 11, 2026 premiere.

Simply titled Avedon, the film premiered at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival and will reach the streaming service in November. Netflix presents it as an intimate portrait of the photographer who transformed fashion imagery and photographic portraiture.

The official Netflix trailer offers a first look at collaborators’ recollections, behind-the-scenes photography and Avedon’s own words.

An extraordinary personal archive opens up

Academy Award-winning director Ron Howard gained extensive access to Richard Avedon’s personal archive. The documentary combines previously unseen photographs, footage from behind the camera and new interviews with people who knew and worked alongside him.

Avedon (1923–2004) photographed models, actors and political leaders, but also people far removed from fame. His portraits, often made against a clean white background and shaped by a direct encounter with his subjects, made photography feel like a conversation. His career and major works are explored in this Richard Avedon retrospective.

The person behind the famous photographs

Howard goes beyond a parade of recognizable portraits. The trailer depicts an artist who wanted control in the studio while searching for the moment when his subjects dropped their public personas. Those closest to him speak about the intensity, discipline and contradictions behind the images.

The film is produced by Imagine Documentaries and Fifth Season in association with the Richard Avedon Foundation. It also joins a long tradition of films about photographers: this selection of photography documentaries includes the earlier Richard Avedon: Darkness and Light from 1996.

When does Avedon arrive on Netflix?

Avedon premieres on Wednesday, November 11, 2026. Netflix lists a running time of about one hour and 44 minutes. As of October 24, the film is not yet available to stream, but viewers can watch the trailer and set a reminder on the official film page.

What we think

For anyone who photographs people, Avedon is a reason to think again about what happens between pressing the shutter and meeting the eyes of the person in front of the lens. A simple backdrop, uncluttered lighting and a sparse composition do not automatically produce a powerful portrait.

What we most want to see is his process: how he spoke to subjects, maintained control of a session and recognized when to let something unexpected happen. If the documentary makes full use of the behind-the-scenes archive rather than relying only on familiar masterpieces, working photographers will have plenty to take from it.

There is an intriguing tension here: a photographer with such a distinctive visual signature was continually trying to get past the prepared public image of the person in front of him. That challenge extends well beyond fashion and remains relevant every time we make a portrait.
