Canon has released new firmware updates for the Cinema EOS C80 and EOS C50, adding features mainly related to remote control, streaming and stability.
The Cinema EOS C80 is updated to firmware version 1.0.6.1, while the EOS C50 receives version 1.0.4.1, with the latter bringing the more extensive list of changes and improvements.
The importance of these new versions lies in Canon’s continued effort to enhance its Cinema EOS cameras with features that matter in real production environments, such as USB control, more reliable SRT streaming and better integration with external systems.
What is new in the Canon EOS C80 firmware
Firmware version 1.0.6.1 for the Canon EOS C80 adds the ability to control key camera functions from an external device via USB, when the power switch is set to CAMERA and the camera is in camera mode.
The supported functions include start and stop recording, One-Shot AF, manual focus adjustment, iris, shutter speed and ISO.
The update also changes the color of the level indicator when the camera is correctly level, making framing easier in productions where precision matters.
Streaming and connectivity improvements for the C80
Canon has added automatic reconnection attempts during SRT protocol streaming if the connection is lost. The function continues trying for the duration specified in the SRT: Reconnection Timeout setting.
The update also fixes issues that could interfere with the camera’s ability to connect to an FTP server, as well as cases where the EOS C80 might not be recognized correctly when connected to a smartphone via USB.
Canon also notes improved operational stability.

Canon EOS C50 gets the bigger update
The Canon EOS C50 receives firmware version 1.0.4.1, which brings more changes compared to the C80.
One of the new additions is the Ease In / Ease Out option for Digital Zoom Speed. When enabled, this setting smooths transitions at the start and end of digital zoom operations, helping create more natural zoom movements during recording.
As with the C80, the C50 gains control of key functions via USB from an external device when the camera is in VIDEO mode. Supported functions include start and stop recording, One-Shot AF, manual focus adjustment, iris, shutter speed and ISO.
New production features for the EOS C50
The EOS C50 firmware changes the color of the level indicator when the camera is level and adds automatic reconnection attempts for SRT streaming if the connection is lost.
In addition, View Assist can now be applied and adjusted during playback, while Broadcast and Multicast support is added to the CV Protocol, with Multicast limited to the same segment.
The update also adds a communication setting menu, making it possible to select OpenLensIO-Equiv. Model, as well as the ability to refer to the description of a Look File and reflect it in the Custom Picture settings when registering it.

Fixes and precautions before installation
On the EOS C50, the update fixes an issue that could cause certain CFexpress cards to be unable to format in the camera.
It also fixes an issue that could cause Digital IS metadata to not be output correctly under specific Slow & Fast Motion settings, when the frame rate is lower than 24P and the shutter is set to Angle with an angle of 180 degrees or below.
Both the C80 and C50 require an SD, SDHC or SDXC card with a capacity of at least 512MB to perform the update. After updating, it is not possible to roll back to a previous firmware version.
Canon also notes that menu settings and Custom Picture settings may be reset after the update, so users should save their settings to a separate card before starting the process.
What we think
The new firmware versions do not change the core identity of either camera, but they add features with direct value in professional workflows. The EOS C50 gains more from this update, but the C80 also becomes more flexible for productions that rely on external control, streaming and modern connected setups.
