The leak matters because it provides more than another list of rumored specifications. For the first time, we have photos said to show a real or pre-production body, revealing significant ergonomic and design changes. At the same time, newer information differs substantially from earlier rumors of a 32.5MP sensor, dual SD card slots and strongly retro-inspired styling.

The first real leaked photos

The main source of the new leak is Canon Rumors, which reports that a Reddit user posted multiple images of the EOS R8 Mark II. According to the site, the images do not resemble Canon’s official product photography and instead look more like material originating from a certification body such as the FCC.

That distinction is important. These are not official product photographs supplied by Canon to the media and should not be presented as such. Based on Canon Rumors and subsequent reporting, however, they appear to show a real pre-production body or a unit used for testing and certification.

Canon Rumors goes as far as saying it considers the images “100% real.” That is the source’s assessment rather than confirmation from Canon, so some caution remains necessary until an official announcement.

A very different design from the EOS R8

The first thing that stands out is the substantial change in design language.

The alleged EOS R8 Mark II has much straighter and more angular lines than the EOS R8, with an almost flat upper section and a more squared-off housing around the electronic viewfinder. It represents a noticeable departure from the curves traditionally associated with many modern EOS R bodies.

The photos also show a revised control layout and an overall more technical-looking body. If the images do represent the final design, the EOS R8 Mark II could indicate a broader change in design direction for at least some future Canon models.

The joystick is now clearly visible

One of the most important ergonomic changes visible in the images is the addition of a rear joystick.

The control is positioned relatively high and close to the electronic viewfinder, in a layout somewhat reminiscent of the EOS R7. Canon Rumors itself commented on this position, making the joystick one of the clearest identifiable elements in the leaked images.

For an EOS R8-class camera, this is a meaningful practical addition. The current EOS R8 lacks a dedicated AF joystick, so the Mark II would offer faster physical AF-point selection without relying solely on the touchscreen or other controls.

The SD card moves to a dedicated side compartment

The photos also appear to confirm another previously rumored change: the SD card has moved to its own side door.

On the current EOS R8, the card shares the lower compartment with the battery. On the alleged Mark II, a separate side door for the SD card can be seen, while the bottom of the camera retains a separate battery door.

This is a small but useful ergonomic improvement, particularly when the camera is mounted on a tripod, cage or other rig where access to the bottom can be difficult.

Current reports still point to a single SD card slot rather than dual slots.

The photos also reveal the ports

Several connectors are visible on the left side of the body. Subsequent analysis of the leaked images identifies USB-C, a microphone input, remote connection and micro-HDMI.

The use of micro-HDMI rather than full-size HDMI suggests that, at least in this respect, the EOS R8 Mark II remains focused on being a compact and relatively accessible full-frame body rather than becoming a smaller EOS R5- or R6-class camera.

The screen provides clues about the electronic shutter

One leaked photo is particularly interesting because the rear display is active.

The interface appears to show a shutter speed of 1/16,000 sec, ISO 102,400 and an indication associated with electronic-shutter operation. These details match the previously leaked specification list, although a menu photograph alone cannot verify every related camera function.

Up to 7.5 stops of IBIS

Perhaps the most significant rumored upgrade over the EOS R8 is the addition of in-body image stabilization.

The latest leaked specifications claim up to 7.5 stops of IBIS.

The current EOS R8 does not feature IBIS, so if confirmed, this would represent one of the second generation’s most meaningful practical upgrades.

It could be especially useful for stills photographers using lenses without optical stabilization as well as handheld video shooters, although its real-world performance can only be assessed after an official launch and independent testing.

40fps, pre-shooting and possibly no mechanical shutter

The leaked list mentions up to 40fps continuous shooting using the electronic shutter and a 20fps pre-shooting function. In the latter mode, the camera is reportedly capable of retaining images from approximately half a second before the shutter button is fully pressed.

Even more interesting is the claim that the EOS R8 Mark II may have no mechanical shutter at all.

If confirmed, this choice would have important practical implications. Sensor readout performance, rolling shutter, flash compatibility and behavior under artificial lighting would become especially important.

Dual Pixel AF II and Deep Learning

For autofocus, the leak mentions Dual Pixel AF II, deep-learning functions, improved animal recognition and face registration.

One of the most unusual claims is a function capable of generating 3D video from 2D images. There is currently too little information about how this would work or what the final output would look like, so this claim requires particular caution until Canon explains it officially.

LP-E17 and one SD card

Despite the upgrades, the latest information suggests that the EOS R8 Mark II will continue to use the LP-E17 battery.

At the same time, the camera is said to feature a single SD card slot, now accessed through its own side compartment. The photographs support the second part of that claim because the new card-access location can clearly be seen.

Retaining the LP-E17 and a single SD card slot are two elements that, if confirmed, would continue to clearly distinguish the R8 Mark II from Canon’s more expensive full-frame bodies.

What happened to the retro design?

The joystick, dedicated side SD card access and redesigned body can already be assessed visually, unlike specifications such as 7.5 stops of IBIS or the 3D-video feature, which remain based solely on unconfirmed information.

If the 24MP sensor, IBIS and 40fps shooting are also confirmed, Canon appears to be prioritizing speed, stabilization and ergonomics for the second-generation R8 rather than simply increasing resolution. The biggest remaining question is the possible complete absence of a mechanical shutter, as that choice would have a meaningful impact on how the camera is used.
