The competition received 4,220 entries from 48 countries, with more than 2,700 entries achieving award-level scores thanks to the exceptionally high standard of submissions.
Twelve categories with new additions
The awards feature 12 categories. Alongside established categories such as Action, Canine Portrait, Creative, Documentary, Equine Portrait, Feline Portrait, Open Portrait and Pets and People, four new categories were introduced in 2026: Commissioned Portfolio, In-Camera Artistry, Phone and Studio.
Category finalists are selected based on the combined scores of their three highest-scoring images, while the International Pet Photographer of the Year finalists are determined by their top five images across all categories.
Creativity without generative AI
The competition does not allow images created using generative AI. While creative editing techniques are permitted within the competition rules, the focus remains on authentic photographic work.
This year’s finalists include memorable images of dogs, cats, horses and other companion animals, combining storytelling, humour and artistic vision.
