Apple has announced a new Mac Studio with M5 Max and M5 Ultra, upgrading its most powerful desktop with more CPU, GPU, memory, AI compute and media engines for demanding professional production.
This is not simply a faster export machine. The new model targets huge RAW catalogs, ultra-high-resolution photography, multiple 4K and 8K streams, demanding color grading, 3D work and local AI models that can require hundreds of gigabytes of unified memory.
M5 Max: the rational professional configuration
M5 Max offers up to an 18-core CPU, with six Super Cores and 12 performance cores, plus a 40-core GPU with a Neural Accelerator in every core. Unified memory reaches 128GB with bandwidth up to 614GB/s.
Apple claims up to 50% faster graphics than the previous generation and up to 3x faster Magic Mask performance in DaVinci Resolve versus Mac Studio with M4 Max. These are Apple benchmarks and should be treated as such until independent testing is available.
M5 Ultra: up to 36 CPU cores, 80 GPU cores and 512GB
M5 Ultra scales to a 36-core CPU —12 Super Cores and 24 performance cores—and an 80-core GPU. Unified memory can be configured up to 512GB with 1.2TB/s bandwidth.
Apple says multithreaded CPU performance is up to 1.3x faster and graphics up to 1.8x faster than M3 Ultra. Peak AI compute is claimed to be up to 4.3x higher than M3 Ultra and 9.8x higher than M1 Ultra.
High-resolution photography and large RAW catalogs
For Lightroom Classic, Capture One and Photoshop, M5 Max is already more than enough for most professionals. Its memory capacity supports huge catalogs, multiple Photoshop documents, focus stacks, panoramas and batch exports without aggressive SSD swapping.
M5 Ultra makes sense when the workload moves beyond conventional photography: hundreds of 100MP files in composites, gigapixel stitching, scientific imaging, large multispectral datasets or several heavy applications running at once.
4K/8K video, ProRes and color grading
M5 Max includes hardware acceleration for H.264, HEVC, ProRes, ProRes RAW and AV1 decode. M5 Ultra doubles the encode/decode blocks compared with M5 Max.
Apple says M5 Ultra can play up to 33 simultaneous 8K ProRes 422 streams at 30fps. That does not mean every codec or effect stack behaves identically, but it indicates substantial headroom for multicam, finishing and compositing.
Final Cut Pro benefits from tight Apple silicon and ProRes integration. Premiere Pro gains from the large GPU and media engines. DaVinci Resolve should see the biggest benefits in temporal noise reduction, Magic Mask, Fusion and complex color nodes. AI and local models
Neural Accelerators inside the GPU and a very large unified memory pool make Mac Studio relevant to generative fill, video masking, upscaling, denoise and local AI models. M5 Ultra’s practical advantage is not only theoretical compute: models that do not fit in 64GB or 128GB systems can run locally on configurations with up to 512GB.
PCIe Gen 6, Thunderbolt 5 and genlock
Apple lists up to twice the storage performance with PCIe Gen 6 SSDs. Mac Studio provides up to six Thunderbolt 5 ports at up to 120Gb/s, 10Gb Ethernet, HDMI, two USB‑A ports, SDXC and a headphone jack. It also supports Wi‑Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 and USB‑C genlock.
European pricing and availability
In Spain, Mac Studio starts at €3,029 with M5 Max and €6,649 with M5 Ultra. Preorders opened on August 25 and availability begins September 22, 2026. Configurations with 512GB of memory are expected in late October.
Apple Greece had not yet listed the new model or local pricing at the time of writing and directs customers to authorised resellers. We therefore do not present the Spanish price as an official Greek price.
What we think
M5 Max is the Mac Studio most professionals need: abundant memory, a powerful GPU and serious 8K headroom. M5 Ultra is a specialised tool for studios where render time is money, or where multiple 8K streams, complex Fusion/3D work and very large local AI models are routine.
Following the permanent discontinuation of Mac Pro, Mac Studio is unquestionably the top of Apple’s desktop range. That does not make it the right purchase for everyone; it makes it the right purchase when the workload can use what is being paid for.
