The issue matters because technology can now do far more than was possible when Furious 7 was completed. The key question is no longer simply whether a convincing Paul Walker can be created, but who can approve a new “performance” by an actor who is no longer alive.

How Furious 7 was completed
Paul Walker died in 2013 before completing filming on Furious 7. The production used his brothers Cody and Caleb Walker, along with John Brotherton, as stand-ins.
In practice, this meant they performed scenes in Walker’s place, providing the body, posture and movement on which VFX artists could later build or adapt his digital face. The process was combined with archival footage and extensive CGI.
Weta Digital worked on roughly 350 shots in the movie, most involving Walker. Many used digital head replacement and face replacement techniques to preserve as much as possible of the actor’s real appearance.
This was not generative AI in the modern sense. It was a highly complex VFX pipeline involving CGI, animation, compositing, body doubles and existing Walker footage.
What modern AI could change
Today, a similar project could combine a traditional digital double, facial tracking, a real actor or body double and machine-learning or generative-AI tools for imagery and, theoretically, voice.
A digital double and generative AI are not the same thing. The former is a digital representation of an actor that can be built and animated using conventional VFX techniques. Generative AI can go further by synthesising material that was never actually recorded.
That creates an important distinction: a brief cameo built from genuine Walker footage is not the same as a new scene in which a system creates expressions, dialogue or movements he never performed.
The ethical and legal boundary
The ability to create a convincing image does not resolve the issue of consent. In California, AB 1836 protects deceased performers against certain unauthorised commercial uses of digital replicas of their likeness or voice, with estate consent forming a key requirement in uses covered by the law.
SAG-AFTRA has also stated that the relevant collective bargaining agreement and state law require estate consent when a deceased performer’s digital replica is used in a motion picture.
In the European Union, AI Act transparency obligations applying from August 2, 2026 also cover AI-generated or manipulated content, including deepfakes in circumstances defined by the regulation.

Fast Forever does not necessarily need a digital Paul Walker to honour Brian O’Conner. Furious 7 had a clear reason to use stand-ins and digital doubles: it needed to complete a film Walker had already been making.
A new appearance almost 15 years later would be different. If it happens, the most important question will not be how convincing the VFX or AI looks, but whether there is consent, transparency and a genuine narrative reason for it. For now, Universal has announced no such plan.
