Apple has introduced the iPhone Duo, its first foldable iPhone, featuring a 7.6-inch inner display, a 5.4-inch outer display, the A20 Pro, two 48MP rear cameras and a starting price of $1,999 in the US and €2,339 in France.

The iPhone Duo officially marks Apple’s entry into the foldable smartphone category. It opens like a book, transforming from a compact iPhone with a 5.4-inch screen into a device with a 7.6-inch Super Retina XDR inner display, while using a Grade 5 titanium frame, a complex precision hinge and the new 2nm A20 Pro.

Its significance goes beyond simply folding. Apple has redesigned iOS 27 around the new form factor, introducing two-app Split View on an iPhone for the first time and using the second display to enable entirely new camera experiences. At the same time, the camera system also illustrates the limits of the new model: Apple’s most expensive iPhone does not receive the triple-camera system or variable aperture found on the iPhone 18 Pro models.

Two displays and the thinnest iPhone when opened

When closed, iPhone Duo has a 5.4-inch outer Super Retina XDR display. According to Apple, it provides around 90 percent of the screen area of the iPhone 18 Pro in a device the company compares in size to a passport.

Opening it reveals a 7.6-inch inner Super Retina XDR display, the largest ever placed on an iPhone. Apple says it offers 50 percent more screen area than the iPhone 18 Pro Max.

Both displays share the same aspect ratio so content can scale proportionally as users move between them. They support ProMotion, Always-On functionality and up to 3,000 nits of peak outdoor brightness.

The inner display is particularly interesting because it uses a nano-texture finish. Apple says it reduces glare and reflections, creates a matte feel and helps make the crease at the fold less visible.

When fully opened, Apple describes the Duo as the thinnest iPhone it has ever made.

A hinge with more than 100 components and IP68 protection

The hinge is a critical component of any foldable, and Apple has designed the Duo’s mechanism using more than 100 individual parts.

The hinge supports the center of the display to keep it flat when fully opened, while integrated magnets help provide a secure closure. The device can also remain positioned at intermediate angles, something that can be used for video calls, photos and video capture without a tripod.

The enclosure is made from Grade 5 titanium with a polished finish, while the hinge cover is 3D printed from titanium. Ceramic Shield protects the back and Ceramic Shield 2 covers the outer display, with Apple claiming three times better scratch resistance than the previous generation of the material.

Even more notable is the IP68 dust- and water-resistance rating, given the additional challenge of sealing a foldable device with a hinge and moving components.

The flexible inner surface uses a dedicated scratch-resistant coating and a custom polymer that Apple says offers up to 40 percent higher stiffness than other comparable materials in the industry.

Two 48MP cameras, but not the iPhone 18 Pro camera system

iPhone Duo has two rear cameras, and this is one of its most important differences from the iPhone 18 Pro family.

The 48MP Fusion Main camera can capture images at up to 48MP, while the default mode produces 24MP files. It features sensor-shift optical image stabilization, zero shutter lag and also offers an optical-quality 2x Telephoto mode by cropping the sensor.

Alongside it is a 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide camera, based on the same Ultra Wide system used by the iPhone 18 Pro models, with macro photography support.

That does not make Duo Apple’s ultimate camera phone. It lacks a dedicated 48MP telephoto camera and the variable-aperture main camera of the iPhone 18 Pro. Apple’s official comparison shows the Duo with 0.5x, 1x and 2x options, while the Pro series has a more complete Pro Fusion system.

For photographers, that distinction matters: Apple’s most expensive iPhone is primarily being purchased for its foldable form factor, not because it contains the company’s best camera system.

Center Stage outside and a FaceTime camera beneath the inner display

On the outside is a 12MP Center Stage front camera that can automatically adjust framing and orientation based on the people in a photo or video.

The inner display uses a different FaceTime camera hidden beneath the panel when it is not in use, preserving an uninterrupted large-screen experience. Apple does not specify a megapixel resolution for this internal camera in its Newsroom announcement.

This is also important in relation to earlier rumors of a 24MP under-display camera: the official announcement confirms the under-display implementation but not that resolution.

Biometric authentication is handled by Touch ID integrated into the side button, while iPhone Duo can also be unlocked using an Apple Watch.

Smart Take, Duo Preview and rear-camera selfies

Apple uses the second display for camera features that are not possible on conventional iPhones.

Duo Preview shows the photographer’s live framing on the outer display, allowing the person being photographed to see the composition and adjust their pose in real time.

Users can also take selfies using the higher-quality 48MP rear cameras while viewing themselves on the outer display.

Smart Take uses on-device AI running on the A20 Pro to recognize when subjects in the scene are posing and automatically capture the image.

Kid Cue can display Peanuts animations on the outer display to attract a child’s attention toward the camera.

In FaceTime, Duo FaceTime allows people standing with the user to view or join a call through the outer display, while Dual Capture can share front and rear camera feeds simultaneously.

4K 120 fps Dolby Vision video

The iPhone Duo’s main camera records Dolby Vision video at up to 4K 120 fps.

Apple also allows Cinematic effects to be applied after capture to video at up to 60 fps, while the upgraded Audio Mix introduces improved voice processing and the ability to isolate music.

Time-lapse recording moves to 4K Dolby Vision HDR. The foldable design provides a practical advantage here: the phone can be positioned on a surface at an angle without a tripod for longer-duration captures.

iOS 27: Split View comes to iPhone

The hardware would have limited value without software designed around it, and iOS 27 has been specifically adapted for Duo.

When the large screen is open, users can place two apps side by side with Split View — a first for iPhone. Users can also open two windows of the same app, such as two Safari windows, save app pairs and return to them later.

Dynamic Island has been redesigned to work vertically along the side of both displays, while navigation elements, the Dock and app controls can also move to the side to preserve more vertical room for content.

Netflix, Zoom, Slack and Detail are among the applications Apple says have already been adapted for the new form factor.

Apple Pencil comes to iPhone for the first time

Later in 2026, iPhone Duo will gain support for the USB-C Apple Pencil.

The stylus will work on either display for taking notes, sketching and marking up documents. It represents a major change in the relationship between iPhone and Apple Pencil, which until now has remained associated with iPad.

For creators, the combination of a 7.6-inch inner display, Pencil support and multitasking creates a new space between a smartphone and a small tablet.

2nm A20 Pro with a dedicated vapor chamber

iPhone Duo uses the same A20 Pro as the iPhone 18 Pro models, manufactured using a 2nm process.

The six-core CPU is, according to Apple, up to 20 percent faster than the A19 Pro, while the seven-core GPU delivers up to 40 percent better performance and improved efficiency. Two 16-core Neural Engines provide twice the compute performance for on-device AI workloads, while unified memory bandwidth increases by 50 percent.

To manage heat inside such a thin enclosure, the A20 Pro connects directly to a custom-designed vapor chamber. Apple claims up to 35 percent better sustained performance than iPhone 17 Pro.

Two batteries and up to 44 hours of video playback

Apple places one high-energy-density battery in each side of the device.

iPhone Duo is eSIM-only worldwide, a decision Apple links to the need to free up valuable internal space for battery capacity.

The new N1 chip handles Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 and Thread, while C2 is Apple’s next-generation cellular modem. US models also add mmWave support.

iOS 27 also introduces iPhone Handoff for supported carriers, making it easier for the same phone number to move between two iPhones.

Siri AI and what this means for Greek users

iPhone Duo ships with iOS 27.1 and supports the new Siri AI and Apple Intelligence capabilities.

Siri AI launches in beta in English, with French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish following in October. Greek is not currently included in Apple’s official language list.

Greek is also absent from the wider Apple Intelligence language list published for iOS 27. As a result, some of the AI functionality emphasized in the iPhone Duo presentation will not be available in Greek at launch.

Availability and pricing in Europe and Greece

In the US, iPhone Duo starts at $1,999 and is available with 256GB, 512GB, 1TB and 2TB of storage in Star White and Night Sky. Pre-orders begin October 16 and first availability starts October 23 in more than 70 countries and regions. Another 28 markets follow on October 30.

It costs more than the Galaxy Z Fold8

Apple’s entry into the foldable market is priced noticeably above its most direct competitor.

In France, Samsung lists an official public price of €1,999 for the Galaxy Z Fold8, while the iPhone Duo starts at €2,339. The difference at entry level is therefore €340.

The iPhone Duo is also €860 more expensive than the iPhone 18 Pro in the same market, where Apple lists the Pro starting at €1,479.

That makes the positioning clear: Apple is not presenting Duo as a replacement for the Pro Max or as the “best iPhone at everything.” It is a different and substantially more expensive form factor that trades some camera versatility for a large folding display, multitasking and new interaction models.

The iPhone Duo is probably the most significant change to the physical form of the iPhone in many years, but its real value will depend more on software and durability than on the simple fact that it folds.

Apple appears to understand one of the central problems of foldables: a bigger screen is not enough unless the software gives users a genuine reason to use it. Split View, two windows of the same app, Apple Pencil, Duo Preview and rear-camera selfies all make meaningful use of the format.

For photographers, however, the choice is more complicated. Duo does not get the complete triple-camera system or variable aperture of the iPhone 18 Pro family. Anyone looking specifically for Apple’s best camera system still has a stronger reason to choose a Pro model. Anyone who wants an iPhone that can transform into a small tablet is paying a very large premium for exactly that capability.
