Shutter Count: How to Check How Many Shots Your Camera Has Taken

Shutter count remains an important indicator when checking a camera, but on modern mirrorless bodies the number needs to be interpreted correctly and with the right tool for each brand and model.

The old methods used to check the “clicks” on a DSLR are no longer enough: today Canon, Nikon, Sony and Fujifilm may require different approaches, including applications that read metadata from photographs and software that communicates directly with a camera over USB.

This is particularly important when buying used equipment, as a single number does not always reveal how much use the mechanical shutter has actually received, and not every online shutter-count checker supports every camera.

What is shutter count?

Shutter count is a counter used to estimate how many photographs or shutter actuations a camera has made.

With DSLRs, the concept was relatively straightforward because taking a photograph was normally closely associated with an actuation of the mechanical shutter.

Modern mirrorless cameras can use a mechanical shutter, electronic first curtain or a fully electronic shutter. The number of photographs taken and the number of times the mechanical shutter has physically moved are therefore not necessarily the same.

For this reason, every value labelled ShutterCount or ExposureCount should not automatically be interpreted in the same way.

Prices are those displayed by the official developers when checked and may vary according to the App Store, local currency or VAT. DIRE Studio lists ShutterCount at €9.99 and its Pro edition at €19.99, with certified support for 108 Canon EOS, 69 Nikon and 30 Pentax models.

ShutterCheck for Mac is priced at $10 for unlimited readings and requires macOS 10.15 Catalina or later.

Camera Shutter Count now also offers a native Windows and macOS application priced at $24.99 as a one-time purchase, with no subscription.

ExifTool remains actively developed, with version 13.59 released on May 27, 2026. Windows users who prefer a graphical interface can use ExifToolGUI 6.3.12, released in May 2026 under the GPLv3 licence.

Canon: choosing the right method

Canon is one of the brands where shutter-count checking is most commonly misunderstood.

Canon itself says that its EDSDK and CCAPI do not provide a function for retrieving shutter count and directs users who need official verification to Canon service. Canon Europe’s EOS Service specifically includes shutter-count verification.

This means that simply uploading a random JPEG to a website is not a universal solution for Canon EOS cameras.

The complete certified list currently contains 108 Canon EOS models. Most supported Canon cameras are read by connecting the body directly over USB, while selected models can also communicate through Wi-Fi or Ethernet.

An important limitation on several newer Canon bodies is that the camera itself reports the counter in increments of 1,000 rather than with single-shot precision.

ShutterCheck for Mac

ShutterCheck is another Canon-focused option available for macOS.

Its compatibility list includes models such as the EOS 5D Mark II, III and IV, EOS 6D and 6D Mark II, EOS 7D and 7D Mark II, EOS 90D, EOS R, RP, R3, R5, R5 C, R6, R6 Mark II, R7, R8, R10, R50 and R100, plus several EOS M bodies.

Camera Shutter Count Desktop

Camera Shutter Count offers another option for Windows and macOS and can read many Canon bodies directly over USB.

Its database currently covers a wide range of bodies from older EOS DSLRs to newer EOS R cameras.

The standard licence costs $24.99 as a one-time purchase with no subscription.

Nikon: easy checking from an image

Many Nikon cameras store shutter-related information inside image metadata, making them easier to check from a photograph.

ShutterCheck Web

ShutterCheck Web is free and runs directly in a browser.

It requires:

• an original JPEG straight from the camera
• no editing
• no resizing
• no metadata stripping
• a file up to 30 MB

Its official compatibility list includes a large range of Nikon DSLRs, from the D2/D3/D4/D5/D6 families through the D500, D600, D700, D750, D780, D800, D810 and D850, as well as many D3000, D5000 and D7000-series bodies.

Camera Shutter Count supports a wider current Nikon range, including newer bodies such as the Z6 III, Z8, Zf, Z50 II and Z5 II.

ShutterCount supports 69 Nikon models in File Mode. Users can provide an original JPEG or native NEF file created in-camera; edited files or DNGs converted by Adobe DNG Converter should not be used.

Sony: free checking without uploading your image

For Sony Alpha cameras, ShutterTool is one of the easiest options.

The browser-based tool reads mechanical shutter actuations from original JPG or ARW files.

Images are processed locally rather than uploaded to a remote server, and the tool works in modern browsers on Windows, macOS and Linux.

The process is simple:

• Take a new photograph.
• Copy the original JPG or ARW from the card.
• Do not re-export it through Lightroom or Photoshop.
• Open ShutterTool.
• Drag the file into the browser.
• Read the reported mechanical shutter actuation count.

The web checker requires a new, unedited image and states that the uploaded image is not stored.

The native desktop application’s EXIF parser runs locally, and its developer states that photographs never leave the device.

For advanced users: ExifTool and ExifToolGUI

ExifTool remains one of the most capable tools for inspecting complete metadata rather than simply returning a shutter-count value.

Depending on the camera, useful fields may include:

The presence and meaning of each field depend on the manufacturer, camera model and firmware.

Mechanical versus electronic shutter

Modern mirrorless cameras may use:

With a fully electronic shutter, the same mechanical movement does not take place.

A camera used extensively in silent or electronic shutter mode may therefore have created far more images than the mechanical actuation number reported by a shutter-count tool.

This is why shutter count on a mirrorless camera has to be interpreted, not merely read.

Why IMG_9999 is not a shutter count

A camera’s filename counter is not a reliable shutter-count indicator.

File numbering may be reset, folders may change, and different cards or settings can affect numbering.

An image named IMG_5421 therefore does not prove that the camera has only taken 5,421 photographs.

How many shutter actuations are too many?

There is no single number that applies to every camera.

Different camera models use different shutter mechanisms and may have different tested durability figures. Even where a manufacturer provides a rated figure, it should not be treated as an expiry date.

Nikon itself notes that the actual number of shutter cycles may be higher or lower than its tested figure.

A body with a higher shutter count is not automatically a bad purchase, just as a camera with a low count is not automatically in excellent condition.

Buying used: what else should you check?

Shutter count is only one part of a proper used-camera inspection.

Check:

• lens mount and contacts
• mechanical shutter operation
• IBIS
• autofocus
• buttons and control dials
• EVF and rear display
• memory-card slots
• USB, HDMI and audio ports
• hot shoe
• battery and battery compartment
• evidence of impact damage
• moisture or oxidation
• serial number
• service history where available

Canon also provides an official European serial-number checker that can verify whether an eligible imaging product was originally intended for sale in the European Economic Area.

Shutter count remains useful, but its value lies in interpreting it correctly rather than simply deciding whether a number looks low or high.

With DSLRs, it was relatively straightforward to treat it as an indicator of mechanical use. With today’s mirrorless cameras, mechanical and electronic shutter operation can coexist, so users need to know exactly what a tool is measuring and whether the specific camera model is genuinely supported.

When buying used equipment, the most sensible approach is to combine a reliable shutter-count reading with a full physical and functional inspection.
