Summary

  • Chris Gampat restored PlayMemories apps on an original Sony a7 with guidance from Claude.
  • Sony ended official downloads in August 2025.
  • The apps bring back multiple exposure and creative effects, but some exhibit problems. The process works only with certain older cameras and carries risks.

An original Sony a7 has regained creative functions that disappeared with PlayMemories Camera Apps, after a photographer used Claude to work through the installation obstacles.

Chris Gampat, founder and editor in chief of The Phoblographer, published his first-hand experiment on October 16, 2026. He did not run an AI model on the camera or create new firmware: AI helped him restore apps that the camera was already capable of running.

The PlayMemories store disappeared, not the camera’s capabilities

Earlier Sony Alpha cameras could add features directly to the body through PlayMemories Camera Apps, including multiple exposure, creative effects, star-trail photography and specialist capture modes. One example was Sony Sky HDR, which combined exposures to balance the sky and landscape.

Sony ended paid-app sales on September 30, 2023, then shut down downloads of both paid and free apps on August 31, 2025. Previously installed apps could keep working, but following a camera reset or certain repairs, they could no longer be reinstalled through Sony’s official service. Sony’s support notice confirms the timetable.

How Claude helped restore the apps

Gampat used Claude to make sense of older discussions, archived app packages and community-built tools. When the graphical installation route did not work with his newer version of macOS, AI helped him find an alternative using Terminal.

A central tool was Sony-PMCA-RE, an independent reverse-engineering project that communicates with supported cameras over USB and can install apps on certain models. It is not a Sony tool. Gampat also explains that Claude’s guidance made the complex process more accessible because of his serious visual impairment.

Which apps returned—and what failed

Gampat reports installing Digital Filter, Light Painting, Star Trail, Multiple Exposure, Touchless Shutter, Picture Effect+ and Photo Retouch on his a7. The standout creative feature was Multiple Exposure, offering themed presets and manual blending choices such as Add, Lighten, Darken, Screen and Multiply.

There are important limitations. The combined Multiple Exposure result is saved as an sRGB JPEG, although the separate RAW frames can be retained. Bulb mode is not available in that workflow. The Light Trails app also repeatedly crashed in his test, requiring a battery removal to restore operation.

The method targets specific older Sony generations that support PlayMemories, not every modern Alpha camera. Gampat says his a7R III cannot run those same apps. Installing software with unofficial tools carries a risk of malfunction and is not equivalent to an official Sony update.

What we think

The exciting part is not that AI suddenly made the sensor smarter or improved image quality. It helped a photographer get more out of functions already supported by a working camera. With so much attention paid to buying the next body, seeing an old a7 regain useful creative features is a welcome change.

Multiple exposures, light-painting effects and star-trail tools can be exactly the things that prompt someone to head out and try a new image without buying more gear. Losing them because an app storefront shuts down is a reminder that camera longevity depends on software support as much as hardware.

That said, we would not try this on a camera needed for a paid shoot tomorrow. The crashes Gampat encountered show that recovering old software does not guarantee reliability. The bigger question for manufacturers is why useful tools should vanish when online services end, even though the cameras themselves are still working.

Frequently asked questions

Did the Sony a7 gain built-in AI?

No. Claude was used on a computer to guide the process. The restored features are older PlayMemories camera apps.

Can PlayMemories apps still be downloaded officially?

No. Sony closed its official download service on August 31, 2025. Apps that were already installed on cameras may continue working.

Does this method work with newer Sony Alpha bodies?

Not in general. It concerns specific compatible older models and should not be assumed to work on newer Alpha cameras. Exact model compatibility and the risks of unofficial installation need to be considered.
