Camp Snap has shrunk its retro digital camcorder into the CS-8 Mini, a colorful Super 8-inspired video camera built for children who want to shoot rather than watch a playback screen.

Announced on November 5, 2026, the new model is less than half the size of the original and remains a digital camcorder, not a film camera. The original Camp Snap CS-8 brought the Super 8 shooting approach to a simple screen-free digital device; the Mini adapts that idea for smaller hands.

Super 8 styling made for smaller hands

The CS-8 Mini weighs just 262 grams and measures approximately 152 × 141 × 50 mm. It retains the distinctive pistol-style grip and recording trigger, while swapping the larger camera’s understated appearance for four bright colors: blue, green, orange, and pink.

The battery and remaining-storage indicators have been redesigned for the smaller body. The idea is to keep the essentials on the camera itself, without sending the user through smartphone menus.

2.7K video, five filters and four aspect ratios

The camera uses a 1/2.7-inch-type sensor and captures video at up to 2.7K resolution at 24 frames per second. In Analog mode, recording runs at 18 fps to evoke an older home-movie feel. Sound is captured through a built-in microphone.

The filter dial offers five looks — Standard, Vintage 1, Vintage 2, Analog, and Black & White — and four framing options: 16:9, 9:16, 1:1 and 4:3. That covers landscape clips, vertical social video, square footage and a more traditional frame without switching devices.

Zoom reaches 8x, but it is digital. Unlike an optical zoom lens, it does not change focal length, so magnification can reduce the actual detail captured in the image.

Shoot first, watch later

As with the original CS-8, there is no screen for instant playback. An electronic viewfinder helps frame shots, but the footage needs to be transferred to another device to be viewed. No Wi-Fi, Bluetooth or companion app is required.

Recording uses the trigger in the handle, creating a separate file for each take. Video is saved on the included 4 GB microSD card and can be transferred through USB-C or a card reader. Shooting is deliberately simple, although a computer or another device is still needed to watch the clips.

Price and availability

The Camp Snap CS-8 Mini launched in the United States for $149.99, with availability through the company’s online store and Target. No verified official European price or specific Greek release date has been found.

What we think

We like the thinking behind this camera: a child presses the trigger and pays attention to what is happening in front of them instead of constantly checking the last clip. The compact grip and physical controls could make a first attempt at filmmaking feel more direct than using a phone.

But having no playback screen is not automatically better for everyone. Someone who wants immediate feedback, to correct a frame, or to reshoot a scene on the spot will need a different device. And if clean detail is the main goal, the small sensor and 8x digital zoom are not reasons to buy this camera.

At $150, we see it more as an unusual creative gift than a low-cost filmmaking solution. Its appeal is giving children a straightforward way to make their own short film — from capturing clips to editing later on a computer.

Frequently asked questions

Does it use Super 8 film?

No. The CS-8 Mini is a digital camcorder styled after classic Super 8 film cameras. Videos are saved to a memory card.

How do you watch videos without a playback screen?

Transfer the files from the included 4 GB microSD card or over USB-C to a computer or another compatible device. No Camp Snap app is required.
