Sony and Reuters have demonstrated a near-live news workflow that preserves C2PA authenticity data from the moment of capture through editing, packaging and video distribution.
The demonstration combines in-camera C2PA information, near-live media transfer and TAMS so provenance information remains associated with the content as it moves from the field into the newsroom. Sony describes the implementation as the world’s first near-live newsroom workflow combining C2PA metadata and TAMS technology, based on its own research.
The significance of the development is not simply that a camera can “sign” a video. The more difficult problem for news organisations is preserving provenance information after a file has been transferred, segmented, edited, packaged and distributed. That is precisely the issue the Sony and Reuters collaboration is trying to address.
From the camera to distribution
The new workflow starts at capture. Sony says C2PA information is recorded when the video is shot and preserved during near-live file transfer. The material is then sent to a TAMS store built to specification V8.2, capable of handling fragmented MP4 segments while preserving embedded C2PA information.
Reuters then retrieves both the near-live file segments and their associated C2PA data for editing and packaging in compatible platforms, including Sony’s Media Backbone Hive. Provenance is therefore treated not as a separate file relevant only at the camera stage, but as part of a wider production chain.
What C2PA is — and what it is not
C2PA, the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity, provides an open technical standard that allows publishers, creators and consumers to access information concerning the origin and editing history of digital content. The associated Content Credentials can operate as a form of content history, recording information about how a file was created and how it changed.
This is different from a simple “AI detector”. C2PA does not, by itself, guarantee that every image or event shown is truthful. Its primary value is that it creates cryptographically verifiable provenance and history information, helping a news organisation understand where a file came from and what happened to it.
Why watermarking matters
One of the most important parts of the demonstration is the use of watermarking as an additional resilience mechanism. According to Sony and Reuters, if conventional metadata is removed somewhere along the workflow, the watermark can be used to recover the original C2PA information.
Reuters Director of Content Distribution Joe Delshadian argues that open standards only become useful when authenticity information survives the entire journey from camera to client. The architecture therefore attempts to address a practical problem: the loss of provenance metadata inside real production and distribution chains.
Why “near-live” changes the equation
In journalism, an authenticity solution has limited value if it significantly delays publication. The Sony–Reuters demonstration is particularly relevant because the necessary provenance information travels continuously alongside near-live media segments rather than requiring the complete recording to finish before a separate verification process begins.
Sony has not disclosed a specific latency figure, so “near-live” should not be interpreted as zero latency. The important point is that the authenticity workflow is being designed for fast-paced news production rather than only for retrospective file verification.
The PXW-Z300 was the previous piece of the puzzle
The demonstration builds on the PXW-Z300, the professional XDCAM camcorder Sony introduced in 2025 as the first camcorder capable of recording C2PA-compliant digital signatures directly into video files. Previous PTTL coverage of the Sony PXW-Z300 highlighted that signing footage inside the camera was only the beginning of the process.
Sony later expanded its Camera Authenticity Solution to support video verification across compatible Alpha and Cinema Line cameras. The Reuters collaboration takes the idea one step further: from signing and verifying the individual file to keeping those credentials intact throughout an operational newsroom chain.
It is not just about cameras
The broader message is that digital content authenticity is evolving from a device feature into an infrastructure feature.
A camera can generate a correctly signed file, but if its provenance is lost during transfer, transcoding, editing or distribution, the chain of trust becomes weaker. The combination of TAMS, compatible production platforms and watermarking points toward workflows in which Content Credentials are expected to survive throughout the media’s lifecycle.
That becomes increasingly important as synthetic images and video become harder to distinguish visually from genuine recordings. For news agencies, reliable information about where a file came from may therefore become almost as important as the visual content itself.

Sony and Reuters will exclusively demonstrate the workflow at IBC 2026, taking place from September 11 to 14 at Amsterdam RAI. It will be shown at Sony’s booth in Hall 13 and Reuters’ booth in Hall 5.
For now, this is a workflow demonstration rather than the announcement of a standalone commercial product or service with a specific price and launch date.

The meaningful progress here is not another generic “AI authenticity” label, but an attempt to solve the difficult production problem: preventing provenance information from disappearing as soon as footage leaves the camera.
C2PA cannot replace journalistic verification, nor can it independently prove that an event has been represented truthfully. But if the Sony–Reuters chain proves dependable in real newsroom conditions, it could become an important step toward an environment in which proof of provenance travels with news footage rather than being added afterwards.
