What the recent cases showed
Reports included a real photograph that acquired an AI label after relatively limited editing, along with cases involving tools such as background removal.
The Verge also tested files from different generative platforms and found inconsistent behaviour. Content from Meta’s own AI tools was labelled more consistently, while other generative images could be published without a visible label even when other provenance information was present.
This does not mean every edited real photograph will be labelled AI, nor that every image from a particular platform will escape labelling. The inconsistency appeared in specific tests.
C2PA is not a “fake image detector”

C2PA is a provenance system: it can record information about how a file was created or modified and cryptographically bind those records to the content.
It is not an AI detector that simply looks at pixels and declares with certainty whether a photograph is real. If a workflow writes metadata interpreted as a generative modification, a label may be triggered. Conversely, if provenance information is absent, removed or not recognised by a platform, no label does not guarantee authenticity.
Meta faced a similar issue in 2024
The company had already changed how AI labels were displayed after complaints that its previous “Made with AI” wording could give a misleading impression on photographs that had only received relatively minor AI-assisted edits.
Meta acknowledged that its earlier approach had not always matched user and industry expectations and moved some information about AI editing into a less prominent location within posts.
