iOS 27 has been available since September 14, and for photographers and creators, the most important changes are in Photos, file transfers and the new Siri mode in Camera — with one major European exception.

Apple has started rolling out the new version as a free update for iPhone 11 and later, as well as iPhone SE 2nd generation or later. Beyond the Liquid Glass refinements and general system improvements, iOS 27 introduces tools that directly affect capturing, editing and moving photos and video.

For an image creator, the point is not simply that “the iPhone is faster.” With iOS 27, Apple brings more AI-assisted editing into Photos, significantly accelerates the appearance of newly captured photos and AirDrop transfers, improves photo search and adds full-resolution sharing to iCloud Shared Albums.

Reframe, Extend and a stronger Clean Up tool in Photos

Photos gains three editing tools powered by Apple Intelligence. Spatial Reframing can change perspective and framing after capture, Extend expands an image beyond its original boundaries, and the upgraded Clean Up tool removes unwanted elements with improved infill.

These tools are not available on every iPhone that can run iOS 27. They require an Apple Intelligence-compatible device — Apple includes iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, iPhone 16 models or later, as well as the newer iPhone Air and iPhone Duo. Availability also depends on a supported language and region.

Apple also notes that intelligent photo editing tools relying on server-side models may be subject to daily usage limits. The company says increased access will be available for a fee in the future, although it has not yet announced a specific pricing model.

Photos up to 70% faster and AirDrop up to 80% faster

Performance may be the most practical change for people who capture and move a lot of files. According to Apple, apps launch up to 30% faster, new photos appear in the Photos library up to 70% faster after capture, and AirDrop transfers are up to 80% faster.

Those percentages come from Apple tests under specific conditions and are not guaranteed improvements on every device. The Photos test used an iPhone 15 with a 50,000-asset library, while AirDrop was tested on an iPhone 16 Plus by transferring multiple photos totaling 30MB between nearby contacts while not connected to a Wi‑Fi network.

For creators who move quick selects from iPhone to Mac or iPad, send material to collaborators or review large amounts of content, these improvements can reduce small but repeated delays throughout the day.

Full-resolution photos and video in iCloud Shared Albums

iCloud Shared Albums now support full-resolution sharing for photos and video. Apple is also making it easier for Android and Windows users to join via iCloud.com, contribute to shared albums and add their own material.

For group shoots, small productions, family projects or fast delivery between different devices, full-resolution sharing matters more than a simple interface redesign because it reduces the need for a separate transfer channel just to avoid losing quality.

Siri mode in Camera — but Siri AI initially stays out of the EU

Siri AI is integrated into the Camera app through Siri mode. On compatible devices, users can point the camera at something in front of them and ask for information or actions based on what the iPhone sees, using Visual Intelligence.

For Greece, however, there is a critical exception: Apple explicitly says Siri AI will not initially be available in the European Union on iOS, iPadOS and watchOS. The rollout starts as a beta in English, with French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish following in October. Greek is not currently included in the list of supported Apple Intelligence languages.

The restriction applies specifically to Siri AI. Apple separately states that new Apple Intelligence capabilities across apps are available on supported products set to a supported language, so it would be inaccurate to treat every AI feature in iOS 27 as disabled across the EU.

Better search, Camera controls and video

Search across Photos, Spotlight and Mail has been rebuilt to be more stable, efficient and comprehensive. For photographers with large libraries, improved Photos Search matters because it can reduce the time needed to find a specific frame among thousands of files.

In Camera, iOS 27 allows users to pin the tools they use most often directly above the camera frame, keeping controls such as flash, Live Photo, timer, exposure, Styles and aspect ratio within easy reach. A new accessibility feature can also generate synchronized captions for videos being watched and translate existing captions where supported.

Which iPhones support iOS 27

iOS 27 supports iPhone 11 and later, including the iPhone 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17 and 18 families, as well as iPhone Air, iPhone Duo and iPhone SE 2nd generation or later. The update is free.

Compatibility with the operating system does not automatically mean compatibility with every Apple Intelligence feature. The new AI tools require more powerful hardware and a supported language, so an iPhone 11, 12, 13 or standard iPhone 15 can install iOS 27 without receiving the complete AI feature set.

What we think

For image creators, iOS 27 is more valuable as a workflow update than as a visual redesign. Faster access to newly captured photos, quicker AirDrop transfers, full-resolution Shared Albums and the new Photos tools can remove real friction from everyday work. The biggest drawback for Greece is that the new Siri AI — and therefore the Siri mode in Camera that depends on it — does not launch in the EU, while the lack of Greek language support further limits the complete experience.

Frequently asked questions

When did iOS 27 become available?

Apple began rolling out iOS 27 on September 14, 2026 as a free software update.

Which iPhones support iOS 27?

iPhone 11 and later are supported, along with iPhone SE 2nd generation or later. Apple Intelligence features have stricter hardware requirements.

What are the new photo tools?

Photos adds Spatial Reframing for changing perspective and framing, Extend for expanding an image, and an upgraded Clean Up tool for removing unwanted objects. An Apple Intelligence-compatible iPhone is required.

Is Siri AI available in Greece?

Not at the initial launch on iPhone. Apple says Siri AI is not initially available in the EU on iOS, iPadOS and watchOS. Greek is also not yet included among the supported Apple Intelligence languages.

Is AirDrop really 80% faster?

Apple reports an improvement of up to 80% in its own test using an iPhone 16 Plus and multiple photos totaling 30MB. Real-world performance depends on the device, settings, network, files and other conditions.
