OM Digital Solutions officially announced the M.Zuiko Digital 14-42mm F3.5-5.6 III, a new compact Micro Four Thirds standard zoom with a 28-84mm equivalent range, 13cm close focusing, Focus Stacking and IPX1 protection.
The new lens was introduced on September 9, 2026 alongside the new OM SYSTEM PEN, weighs just 125 grams and will be available both separately and as the new camera’s kit lens.
The significance of the announcement is not in the familiar 14-42mm range or F3.5-5.6 aperture, but in its practical improvements: a much shorter minimum focusing distance, official dust and splash protection, operation down to -10°C and a simpler retractable mechanism, all of which make the new lens considerably more versatile than a typical kit zoom.
28-84mm equivalent range for everyday photography
The M.Zuiko Digital 14-42mm F3.5-5.6 III covers focal lengths from 14-42mm on Micro Four Thirds, providing an angle of view equivalent to 28-84mm on full frame. This is the classic standard zoom range for travel, street photography, landscapes, people, portraits and everyday details without changing lenses.
Maximum aperture is F3.5 at 14mm and F5.6 at 42mm, while the minimum aperture is F22. The optical construction consists of eight elements in seven groups, including three aspherical elements.
The aperture uses seven rounded blades and the lens accepts 46mm filters.
The major change is close focusing
The most interesting technical feature of the new 14-42mm III is its ability to get much closer to the subject.
At 14mm, minimum focusing distance is just 0.13m, while at 42mm it is 0.30m. Actual maximum magnification reaches 0.26x at the wide end and 0.19x at 42mm. In 35mm-equivalent terms, OM SYSTEM quotes maximum magnification of 0.53x at 14mm and 0.38x at 42mm.
That does not turn it into a true macro lens, but it makes it considerably more useful for flowers, food, objects, textures and other small details encountered in everyday photography.
The new lens also supports Focus Stacking on compatible OM SYSTEM cameras, allowing images with greater depth of field to be created during close-up shooting.
IPX1 and operation down to -10°C
The second major upgrade is weather resistance.
The M.Zuiko Digital 14-42mm F3.5-5.6 III features a dustproof design and IPX1-rated splashproof protection when used with a compatible weather-sealed OM SYSTEM body. The company also specifies operation down to -10°C.
This becomes particularly relevant because the new PEN is also the first PEN with IPX1 protection. The official kit therefore creates a small, complete Micro Four Thirds system with dust and splash resistance.
125 grams and a simpler retractable mechanism
The lens weighs 125 grams without its caps and measures 60 x 50.5mm. It does not include optical image stabilization, which is unsurprising given that modern OM SYSTEM cameras rely on in-body stabilization.
The retractable mechanism has also been simplified. Extending or retracting the lens only requires rotating the zoom ring, without a separate release switch. OM SYSTEM describes it as a click-style retractable mechanism.
With the new PEN, total system weight is approximately 518 grams, compared with around 543 grams on the OM-5 Mark II and 621 grams on the OM-3.
MSC autofocus for stills and video
The lens uses OM SYSTEM’s MSC, Movie & Still Compatible, mechanism, designed to provide fast and nearly silent autofocus for both still photography and video.
The lack of optical stabilization means resistance to camera shake depends on the IBIS system of the camera body being used.
What changes compared with the 14-42mm II R
The “III” name positions the lens as an evolution of the M.Zuiko Digital 14-42mm F3.5-5.6 II R.
The older II R offered the same 28-84mm equivalent range and also used eight elements in seven groups, but its minimum focusing distance started at 25cm between 14-19mm and 30cm through the remainder of the zoom range. It weighed 113 grams.
The III is therefore 12 grams heavier, but at 14mm it almost halves the minimum focusing distance from 25 to 13cm. It also adds IPX1 protection and eliminates the separate UNLOCK switch required by the II R when returning the lens to its retracted position.
And compared with the 14-42mm EZ Pancake?
The M.Zuiko Digital ED 14-42mm F3.5-5.6 EZ is a different proposition, and PTTL covered its original announcement in 2014.
The EZ remains considerably smaller: it measures just 22.5mm long when retracted and weighs 93 grams, while using a powered zoom mechanism. It focuses from 20cm at 14mm and 25cm at 42mm, with maximum magnification of 0.23x, or 0.46x equivalent.
The new III is therefore larger and 32 grams heavier than the EZ, but provides better close focusing at the wide end, greater maximum equivalent magnification, Focus Stacking and IPX1 weather sealing.
They ultimately prioritize different things: the EZ remains focused on extreme compactness and power zoom, while the III places greater emphasis on durability, mechanical simplicity and close-up performance.
Availability and price
The official European price of the M.Zuiko Digital 14-42mm F3.5-5.6 III is €399. OM SYSTEM’s European store lists shipping from October 1, 2026.
In Japan, the company lists availability for late October 2026, so launch timing varies by market.
The lens is also included with the new PEN. In Europe, the PEN costs €999 body-only and €1,099 with the 14-42mm III, meaning the lens adds just €100 when purchased as part of that kit.

What we think
The new 14-42mm III does not stand out on paper through a faster aperture or extremely small dimensions. Its value lies in changes that matter more during everyday use: IPX1 protection, much better close focusing, Focus Stacking and a simpler retractable mechanism.
At €399 as a standalone lens, the price is demanding for an F3.5-5.6 standard zoom. The picture becomes much more attractive in the €1,099 PEN kit, where the lens adds only €100 to the body price. That is likely its most natural role: a small, durable and versatile everyday zoom complementing the new PEN concept.
