Summary
- Nikon released firmware 5.33 for the Z9 and 3.12 for the Z8.
- Both updates address an issue that could leave the cameras unresponsive with certain lenses.
- No new shooting features are announced.
- Users should follow Nikon’s model-specific installation instructions and precautions.
Nikon released new firmware for the Z9 and Z8 on October 20, 2026, fixing an issue that could cause either camera to stop responding when used with certain lenses.
The updates are version 5.33 for the Nikon Z9 and 3.12 for the Nikon Z8. Neither introduces new shooting features this time; both focus on reliability for cameras frequently used in demanding professional work.
What the new firmware fixes
Nikon lists the same fix for both bodies: an issue that could cause the camera to become unresponsive with some lenses. Its release notes do not identify the affected lenses or describe the precise conditions that triggered the failure.
For wildlife, sports and news photographers, an unexpected freeze can mean losing a moment that cannot be repeated. These releases do not claim improvements to autofocus, burst speed or video capabilities.
Nikon Z9: Firmware 5.33
Firmware C 5.33 succeeds version 5.32 and incorporates changes from previous releases. Beyond the new fix, Nikon highlights an important installation detail involving the GNSS module.
If GNSS firmware version “G” is not shown in the firmware menu, or is earlier than 0.17, the firmware update must be performed twice: once to update firmware C, then again to update the GNSS module. If version G 0.17 is already installed, that second update is unnecessary.

Nikon Z8: Firmware 3.12
The Z8 moves from firmware C 3.11 to 3.12, resolving the same possible loss of responsiveness with certain lenses. The release supports cameras running C firmware 1.00 through 3.11. The file is named Z_8_0312.bin and is approximately 94.46 MB.
The previous Nikon Z8 firmware 3.11 update addressed three different issues involving NX Tether, High-Frequency Flicker Reduction and Manage Picture Control. Those older fixes remain part of the accumulated firmware history rather than being new 3.12 features.

Before installing
First check Firmware version in the camera setup menu. Nikon requires a computer and card reader. Copy the appropriate firmware file to the root directory of a memory card formatted in the camera, not inside a folder.
Nikon warns against updating with lenses other than NIKKOR Z lenses attached, or mount adapters other than FTZ and FTZ II. The Z8 uses memory-card slot 1 for this procedure.
If upgrading from a much older release, read the IPTC preset notes before starting. On the Z8, updating from firmware C 1.01 or earlier can erase the IPTC presets stored in the camera; back them up separately to the card as instructed. Use a sufficiently charged battery and do not interrupt installation.
What we think
Minor firmware releases do not attract as much attention as a new autofocus or video feature. But this fix addresses something more fundamental: a camera should not suddenly become unresponsive during an important shoot.
That matters especially when a photographer is waiting for wildlife behavior or covering a decisive moment in sport. There may be no opportunity to recreate the photograph if the equipment needs restarting.
Nikon could have been more specific about the affected lenses and circumstances. Without that information, owners cannot easily assess whether their equipment combinations were at risk. The fix is available, but the technical explanation remains limited.
For professional cameras, reliability is reason enough to consider the update promptly, while following the installation precautions and avoiding an untested upgrade just before an important assignment.
Frequently asked questions
Do these updates add new shooting features?
No. The published changes focus on fixing an unresponsive-camera issue with some lenses rather than introducing new shooting functions.
Do I need to install every older firmware first?
No. Nikon states that the latest update includes previous changes. For the Z9, check whether a second update is required for GNSS firmware.
Which lenses are affected?
Nikon does not identify specific lenses in the release notes for this fix.
